My question is about the original series OST's. There was the single lp/cassette/disc and a two disc version. I have both, though played the single disc far more back in the days.

Playing the two disc version it appears the orchestrations are completely different. I understand more music was added (of course) But even the Vangelis cues sound different. Am I hearing things or are they really that different? What would be the reason behind this? Did Vangelis rewrite his cues for the series and perhaps the two disc set used his original compositions?

I much prefer the original single disc version.

I prefer the 1-disc version, too.

It's where I heard Toru Takemitsu for the very first time. For years I've been infatuated with that piece, and I've always kept my eye out for the original DG CD. I managed to buy a decent vinyl copy a couple of years ago, but I've had no luck getting the CD so far.

I thought they would include more of his piece when they put out the 2-disc set. But no, they couldn't be bothered to put on his track AT ALL. They needed to make room for "Aquarius", I guess.

I never did a really close comparison, but it seemed to me that the selections that were ported over from the old version were simply longer excerpts from those pieces, or were different recordings. A few of them were not the versions I grew so fond of from the first edition, so I hardly ever play it. I'd be guessing, but maybe the disc's producers just wanted to provide selections that had upgraded sound quality.

The different versions were likely down to rights issues, as Cosmos has been owned by different companies over the years and re-edited to different lengths (the original had no commercials, but later editions had to be cut by ten-twenty minutes each episode to allow commercial broadcasters to air it). The original PBS zero-royalties deal likely expired decades ago.

Yeah, I'm gonna import the single disc, not liking the two disc at all. No wonder I purchased it all those years ago and didn't really play it. At first I thought the orchestrations were just longer, but they are most certainly different.

I didn't realize Cosmos was re-cut and redistributed until recently. Ive only seen the PBS version and its original run all those years ago. I saw part of one re-cut episode, and I believe they changed out Vangelis end credit music with something horribly generic. I decided immediately I wasn't going to re-watch the series at that point. Cosmos is like Star Wars, were you know every tiny bit of it and any little change feels jarring.

Thanks for the additional info guys.

Regarding Cosmos the original series on DVD. Are these the original uncut versions shown on PBS, or later versions that were cut down in length with different music?
