My pc is very slow, and I'm planning to run a CCleaner scan for the first time in years.
I've heard CCleaner can cause problems for novice users like me, so does anyone have any suggestions on how I can run the CCleaner scan easily and avoid these problems?

It sure couldn't hurt. I find it as safe a program as any out there. It's quite reputable.
For a long time my kid begged me to install it and, thanks to the high degree of paranoia I had at the time, I resisted. But after doing more reading on it, I changed my mind. So now we've had it for years and I wouldn't want to go without it.
And if you haven't done it in a long time you will free up a ton of memory! Just do it during down time if how long it might take is an issue.

No problem using it.
Just check the parameters to see what you want to keep; in any case, at the end of the scan, you can go through the list and pick things you want to keep or let it erase it all.
It also enables you to make a backup file before doing any changes.

I should do a little leaning up too, as a matter of fact.

if you have a 32 bit i'd go with Window Washer, but with 64 bit ccleaner is perfect. as for settings you can change it from 1 pass to 35 passes. if you're using it for the first time might want to avoid 35 passes since it could take hours.

and you might want to try a defrag or scanning for viruses if it's still sluggish

TIP
If CCleaner is taking an extraordinary time to complete, empty your recycle bin before you start the program. e.g. if you have video files in your recycle bin get rid of them first.

Your bigger problem may be programs you didn't intend to install and don't want. Use CCleaner (or better, Revo Uninstaller) to uninstall things like browser bars, run the cleaner, then run the Registry Cleaner.

Use Microsoft Security Essentials for your anti-virus needs, and Spybot Search&Destroy if you feel you have deeper issues.

A neat and excellent little program is 'GLARY UTILITIES' which is free, fast, and has lots of functions, and isn't greedy on older machines with less RAM.

The thing to do is to have several different cleaners installed, and run them separately. It seems nothing alone catches everything.

Don't forget Windows' own built-in registry defrag (as opposed to the disc defrag) which hardly anyone uses. It's on one of the disc clean menus and needs a reboot to complete.

I've found Microsoft Security Essentials slows the computer and internet down and it doesn't do anything special that I don't get from a faster and easier to use program called Malwarebytes.

Another good progam I use to clean up the computer, is called Temp File Cleaner (by OldTimer). You have to log in as an administrator and it shuts down all programs though. So you have to either log out or restart the computer, as cookies get stored elsewhere in Administrator mode, making you think they've all been cleaned out. But it's a great program.

If you also want some more speed, try:
START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

After it's done running, which can take a minute or several minutes (if you've never done it before, probably several minutes), then a box will pop up with a list and check boxes so you can choose what to clear out. Then Defrag afterwards. If it's been a long time since Defrag or you have never Degragged, you can expect hours for the program to finish (you'll need to disable Sleep so it's not interrupted; some older versions of Windows can't Defrag while you do other things).

CCleaner's maker Piriform has a defrag program, Defraggler.

Auslogics has another, very good one: Disk Defrag

That's what I use. After getting familiar with CCleaner I noticed the Defraggler feature so I gave it a shot. I noticed right away it wasn't as much of a resource hog as the default XP program. Now I use it regularly.
