Amazing how "The Chimes of Big Ben" has had such a strong impact among the viewers ! It is also, by a long shot, my favorite episode. Cannot come up with another four right now but I will think about it. I just remember one episode in which Number 6 drives Number 2 completely nuts by making him believe he is an active spy within The Village [At one point Number 6 keeps listening to a Beethoven's symphony like if there were a secret message recorded in it].

Eva, the episode you're referring to is "Hammer Into Anvil".

Here are my faves:

1) The Chimes of Big Ben
2) Arrival
3) Hammer Into Anvil
4) The Girl Who Was Death
5) Many Happy Returns

....of course, most of them are pretty good.

Pleasantly surprised to see the general approbation for Hammer Into Anvil. It's an atypical episode, but I think it's so well done.

1) Once Upon A Time
2) Checkmate
3) Hammer Into Anvil
4) The Chimes of Big Ben
5) A Change of Mind

(Honorable mention to Free For All, which is very powerful and manages to illustrate so many themes of the series in one show.)

Eva,
That would be Hammer into Anvil, one of my favourite episodes. I always thought Patrick Cargill made a great Number 2.

Not Beethoven : it's Bizet's L'ARLESIENNE, which is a quite relevant choice since Bizet's drama is about a woman everybody talks about but who never shows up...like the fake inside plot !

I don't have the DVDs, and I hadn't seen any episodes in decades, but when over at my brother's house a few weeks ago, a "random viewing" from his collection turned out to be "The Schizoid Man". I thought it was absolutely excellent, certainly as good as (if not better than) I'd always remembered the series to be. Totally compelling. Much of it was down to Patrick McGoohan's very idiosyncratic portrayal (he seems to just exude "intelligence on a higher level than mere humans"), but really everything was spot-on here. And wasn't Jane Merrow a doll? Posh '60s totty - a treat.

Much of my fascination for McGoohan's performances is because he seemed uncomfortable in his own skin. He radiated tension which always made me feel uneasy watching him. I don't know of *any* actor who could do that and I don't even know if McGoohan knew he was doing it. It was more like an extension of who he was rather than acting.

Yes, which also made him a great killer in COLUMBO too. He was always quite hypnotic to watch.

Speaking of Columbo, allow me to do the Self-Promotion Rumba:

The episode "It's Your Funeral" needs to crack my top five list...excellent performances from Andre Van Gyseghem (the retiring Number Two) and Derren Nesbitt (young Number Two)

"Be seeing you."

They are all good ESPECIALLY Fall Out 'cause it's so much fun! Seriously. It's no coincidence that McGoohan uses Beatles music in this because it's his own I Am the Walrus. If you view it as a good time episode it's great.

And the amount of people I know who were conned when they saw 'Prisoner' billed under alternative channels (title with no other info) in the once exclusively ITV listing magazine Tv Times, here in the UK in the eighties when it turned to be indeed the Aussie series which was new to us then...!

So, in no real order as they change depending on the day, or viewing:

Free For All
Arrival
Chimes of Big Ben
Fall Out
Checkmate

Difficult though when there's only 17, and it's a pretty perfect series. Seen them all so much they're like a favourite album of songs that I can watch anytime. Attended more than one weekend full series marathon party, including in the village, Portmeirion, itself. Was in (official appreciation society) Six of One for a few years, contributed to their publications and went on location in London for the documentary Six into One: The Prisoner File.

Blink and you'll miss me! At about the 21.15 mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUysgDRYYqo Long blonde-ish hair, brown velvet jacket and white boots.

And I just happen to have the Network BD sitting under my Christmas tree ready for my first hi-def watch.

Be seeing them soon.

I was such a huge Prisoner fan when the show was re-aired in the 70s and was a member of Six of One for a number of years.

My favourite episodes are:

Arrival

Hammer Into Anvil

The Chimes of Big Ben

Many Happy Returns

Checkmate

I also really like The Girl Who Was Death.
