1984 is filled with a lot of childhood favorites. The "84 Trifecta" for me is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Ghostbusters and Gremlins. They are also the earliest theatrical films that I have the clearest memories of seeing.

My Top 10 (in alphabetical order)
1. Beverly Hills Cop
2. Ghostbusters
3. Gremlins
4. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street
6. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
7. The Terminator
8. The NeverEnding Story
9. Romancing the Stone
10. The Last Starfighter

OTHERS I LIKE: 2010, Amadeus, Children of the Corn, City Heat, Cloak & Dagger, Dreamscape, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Iceman, The Karate Kid, Missing in Action, Night of the Comet, Police Academy, Runaway, Starman, Tightrope, Top Secret!

DIDN'T LIKE: The Company of Wolves, Hard to Hold, The Ice Pirates, Red Dawn, Streets of Fire.

Temple of Doom has always been -- by a fair margin -- my least favorite of the Indy films. I feel kind of bad about that since a number of my problems with it are trivial (the reversed splits, the Raiders reference even though this is technically a prequel, etc).

As for Gremlins, I need to revisit it, as my childhood memories are full of repeated viewings of the sequel -- even though I could probably still recite large chunks of the original verbatim, I don't think I really got into it until around the time the sequel was released, whereas The Neverending Story was a huge, huge part of my early childhood.

It's interesting to me now to consider how childhood favorite stack up against "classics" from these early years of my life.

Funny enough, I didn't care for the sequel when it first came out because I didn't like the change in tone to being more of a straight-on comedy. I started liking it years later, though, but still prefer the original. My mom has often told the story about how she took me to see the original in the theater, and I was enjoying it just fine until the evil gremlins showed up, then I was wanted to leave. Haha! She made me stay, though, and of course I was later glad she did because I ended up loving it. I spent the rest of that summer running around the neighborhood with a plush Gizmo (which I still have) hanging out of my backpack. big grin

It's interesting to me now to consider how childhood favorite stack up against "classics" from these early years of my life.

It is always interesting to go back and visit other films from that time that you never saw then, just because they were of a different genre or perhaps "adult" movies compared to the things you liked as a kid. But even if there are other movies that may technically be "better" than my childhood favorites, I usually still prefer the latter because those are the movies that became the most personal to me.

1) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

I saw this 33 times in theaters, a personal record for me when I was an avid moviegoer in the 80s. A new theater opened in Fairfax, Va. at Fair Oaks Mall and I was first in line waiting to buy a ticket. Got my picture in the paper taken by a local reporter and everything! I never had a problem with the "reaching for the gun" gag. I just assumed Indy tried that many times even prior to the events in TOD.

2) Gremlins
3) Star Trek III
4) Ghostbusters
5) Blood Simple
6) The Last Starfighter
7) The Terminator (one patron fell asleep and was snoring loudly at one screening)
8) Splash
9) 2010
10) Purple Rain

That's pretty cool. Do you still have a copy?

No. It was lost decades ago. Not much to see anyway. They were concentrating on this newly opened theater anyway and two ladies sitting in beach lounge chairs next to me (the line was outdoors) partially obscured my picture. Oh well!

I'm always hated for my two favorites of 1984, but since you asked, here goes:

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"
"Star Trek III: The Search for Spock"

Can't really think of eight others, but I also enjoyed "The Karate Kid", "Gremlins" and "Amadeus" (that was 1984, wasn't it?).

Going back to a film a couple have listed: anyone know why High Road to China isn't even listed on Netflix? Does it have some kind of objectionable content or is that just an oversight on their part? I'd like to see the film but the home video editions are a little pricey just to check it out.

It was. I'm going to work forward through the years? Would people prefer separate threads?

I think that would work better. But I'm usually out voted on such things. D

Local Hero is really a lovely and odd little film. It challenges your patience at moments, but if you see it through the experience really does pay off. It is penetratingly good somehow that does not make sense.

I like Return of the Jedi. Theoretically all the stuff with the Ewoks was marketing garbage, but those space battles are really terrific.
