I think it's one of the all-time great adventures ever filmed. Very intelligent script. There's a scene in it, which I imagine might have inspired a similar scene in Spielberg's "Raiders," because it plays very similarly, in which Kirk Douglas is running up the beach to get back to the submarine, and it turns out he's got scores of native tribesmen on his tail.

It is remarkable in many ways, the extent of the production, the actors, the sets that are so good and interesting, that widescreen, that some of it was actually shot in real open natural water, not entirely on a soundstage tank or faked water. James Mason is so perfectly persuasive in all those layers to that man too. I watch this with my kids over and over. Even with better technology I do not think this one can be bettered.
