In retrospect I think Clara's response to the regeneration was written the wrong way. She didn't have the same kind of personal connection with the Doctor that Amy had, literally growing up with the Time Lord. Second, Clara was accustomed to all the Time Lords, and their different personalities.
So her plea for not changing seems to exist only for a three hanky ending. (Which I am fine with if appropriate) Clara should've taken the high road and shown more dignity about the inevitable regeneration. Smiling in acceptance and touching his hand. (If that's possible)
Further more her shock over the Doctor's new appearance seemed forced. Clara was quite aware of the different faces of the Doctor. Sure he looks much different, but it shouldn't have been a total shock to her.
Yes...and no.
While Clara is aware of different incarnations of the Doctor, having met 2 others and fragments of her have encountered all of them (although her memory seems to be vague on that) she does clearly have a very strong attachment to "her" Doctor.
In The Day Of The Doctor, when she realizes that the Matt Smith one will also pull the big red button that destroys Gallifrey, she begins to weep because it's "her" Doctor that will (also) carry out the act. And hold an impassioned plea. Very clearly setting him apart from Captain Grumpy and Sandshoes.
Clara- "Look at you. There's three of you. The warrior, the hero and you!"
The 11th Doctor- "And what am i?"
Clara- "Have you really forgotten?"
The 11th Doctor- "Yes...maybe...yes."
Clara- "We've got enough warriors. Any old idiot can be a hero."
The 11th Doctor- "And what do I do?"
Clara- "What you've always done...be a Doctor."
This basically shows that while being more aware of his generation then any other companion, Clara really does differentiate the other incarnations from HER version of The Doctor.
Jenna Coleman is just ace in that scene btw. And her reactions to the death of the 11th match her sentiments in the scene above.

Good points and well taken.  Your right Coleman aced it. When she cocked her head slightly to one side I lost it! Then Amy appeared and I lost it even more. I'm such a sap!
