I can't believe the crowd at this board hasn't yet recognized Howard Shore as a conductor in King Kong, Lalo Schifrin as a conductor in Red Dragon, etc. razz There must be more I'm forgetting too, though...

John Williams as pianist in STACCATO.

If we're going down that road, John Barry conducted a source-music orchestra on screen in THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS.

And half the cast in Escape to Victory were professional footballers playing POW footballers: Pele, Bobby Moore, Ossie ("Tottingham") Ardiles, John Wark and a host of others.

Bit of a stretch, though, because I don't think any of them was a natural actor, nor did any other films, thank the lord.

well, kinda. But Bobby Moore turned up with Kenny lynch in a few episodes and a movie of Tiill Death us do part.
They were his heroes. Winston Churchill and Bobby.

Michael Caine (superbly) plays an actor in Without a Clue

Jane Horrocks is a fantastic impressionist in Little Voice (Michael Caine made me think of that...)

Wished id remember that mr greg. In truth one of Caines best performances - a very passable Holmes "Come along Watson" and a drunken womanising actor

Interestingly, you have ex-footballers like Eric Cantona and Vinnie Jones who HAVE pursued a career in acting, but I don't believe they've ever played any footballers in their movies.

And therein lies the conundrum of this thread's title -- 'actors that play their professions' can only be ACTORS that play ACTORS. If solium had intended something else, he should probably have said 'people who play their professions in movies', which quite often means the same as 'people who play themselves'.

Yes, Thor is correct with my intent. A sports star getting an acting gig playing a sports star is not an actor, but a sports star playing a sports star. So models, (which I mentioned one myself) wouldn't really count either.

I'm guilty for not moderating my own thread and letting it slide. frown Thankfully we have Thor to set things right. big grin

When does one go from another profession into a bonafided acting career? And when is one just a celebrity playing their profession on screen? I guess there are some grey areas there.

Indeed! And some of it filmed just a couple of miles from me at the Mariner's Church at Gloucester Docks, I think...but cracking performance by Caine.

Burt Reynolds played a Brandoesque actor in an old Twilight Zone ep.
As I recall he seemed worried about his tertiary motivation.
big grin
