One of a kind. He really was one of those totally original individuals who never buckled down to conformity. I wish more people had brains and guts like that.
I think that my favourite film AND score of his is BUCKET OF BLOOD. I prefer that one to the generally higher-regarded LITTLE SHOPPE. BUCKET OF BLOOD is a riot, and extremely funny, with all those knowing digs at Ginsberg etc. Wonderful, and Katz was just perfect for that project.
By the way, in that obit link, doesn't he look a lot like a very old Vincent Price? Maybe mixed in with an incredibly ancient Sean Penn...
I loved the look on Katz's face when the jazz hipster chick in Sweet Smell of Success was foisted on him by Martin "Steve Dallas" Milner. Katz also showed up on the "Swinging Longhair" episode of Johnny Staccato.

There's an interview somewhere in which Katz says that it was LITTLE SHOP which had music tracked in from previous Corman films, so maybe a bit of BUCKET turned up in that, but in that order and not vice versa. Didn't Fred Katz compose the opening and closing musical cues for THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE? I have always loved those, and was so glad to finally have them on CD.
Excerpt: "I hated every picture that Corman did, but you've got to be a professional about this." I'm sure that Mr. Katz was not to only movie composer to harbor such sentiments. We all have to earn a living somehow.

A BUCKET OF BLOOD was released around October 1959, while THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS did not go into production until December 1959 (and was released in September 1960).

Onya, not very specific, but I think all music of "Little Shop of Horrors" (and the CD) was originally from "A Bucket of Blood".
