I recently purchased a compilation cd of the scores of Christopher Gunning entitled "THE FILM & TV MUSIC OF CHRISTOPHER GUNNING" from Chandos. I have been shying away compiltations in favor of complete works. However, this cd is as amazing as many complete scores I own but I just HAVE to share one particular track with you.

Track 6 is from Gunning's movie score for "Rebecca". I honestly feel that this maybe one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard be it only 6:38 in duration. I cannot even describe how it makes me feel. The melancholy presence of the cello at the opening and closing of this piece is stunning.

It saddens me that a complete score for this movie is not available but I will take what I can get. I would highly recommend this compilation of Gunning's music to everyone. It is more than worth the price.

Did I use enough adjectives?

A couple of the original tracks from REBECCA appear on Gunning's promotional 1998 2-CD set Music For Films and Television (not to be confused with the 1994 set with the same title).

They are: Manderlay (3'42") and Opening Title (3'06").

Christopher Gunning is fantastic and I think you've bought an excellent CD there.

I received it as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago and it played endlessly all Christmas Day. Everyone in the family loved it.

totally agree - tremendous composer whose contribution to Poirot is just as great as Mr Suchet's

Julian, thank you for pointing out this 2 cd set to me - will definitely look for it. Stephen, how wonderful that your family could enjoy this beautiful music with you in Christmas Day! Who said it has to be holiday music on Dec. 25th? Finally to terry, Poirot was such a fun and well produced series. What a treat to know that Christopher Gunning played such a part!

Fantastic news. Gunning's wonderful and I, too, love the handful of cues included on his promo CD.

This guy's given us a lot of wonderful music: FIREFLY, WHEN THE WHALES CAME, WILD AFRICA among others.

The few cues from his also-unreleased score for COLD LAZARUS featured on the promo sound awesome as well, let's hope someone has their eye on that one too.

Bring on his wonderful back catalogue!

The folks at Silva screen did release Cold Lazarus !

Fantastic work. My favorite Gunning score.

By the way, has anyone noticed that the theme from the episode How Does Your Garden Grow? from POIROT is VERY close to the theme from The Fury by John Williams ?

Curiously, I just last week purchased the Chandos collection that Edwina started this thread with - and just loaded it on my iPod this morning. And now you all are getting me to think about the full albums when I'm barely getting to know the suites from Rebecca and Cold Lazarus. What timing!

What you mean exactly? Rebecca? Well... it's not released yet... it will be "officially" released at the end of the month.

Now I REALLY can't wait for this. That suite is gorgeous, just such devastating string writing. And those big lush moments are a revelation, as the suite from his promo didn't really explore that more bucolic side. Sounds like a fantastic companion to FIRELIGHT from the same year!
