A difficult year for the ranking. Two major efforts from Spielberg, one of which I find problematic but still wish to recognize as a major achievement. Movie of the year for me is Groundhog Day, a nearly perfect comedy. Major childhood film that continues to impress is The Nightmare Before Christmas. As will often continue to be the case, this is a year with a number of good to very good movies but few truly great ones.

Groundhog Day (Harold Ramis)

Schindler's List (Steven Spielberg)

The Piano (Jane Campion)

In the Name of the Father (Jim Sheridan)

Fearless (Peter Weir)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (Henry Selick)

Naked (Mike Leigh)

Three Colors: Blue (Krzysztof Kieslowski)

Farewell My Concubine (Chen Kaige)

Ruby in Paradise (Victor Nuñez)

Other notable films, childhood favs, etc, in rough order of preference: What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Remains of the Day, Searching for Bobby Fischer, A Perfect World, Jurassic Park, Benny & Joon, The Cement Garden, Red Rock West, True Romance, Shadowlands, The Wedding Banquet, The Blue Kite, Map of the, Human Heart, Matinee, The Sandlot, Short Cuts, Cronos, The Fugitive, A Foreign Field, Iron Monkey, Tombstone, Dazed & Confused, Carlito's Way, In the Line of Fire, Much Ado About Nothing, This Boy's Life, Dave, Falling Down, Philadelphia, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Cool Runnings, A Far Off Place, Rudy, Alive, Gettysburg, The Bride with White Hair

What are your favorites of the year? What have I missed? What should I check out?

My 5 favourite films from 1993, not including the obvious out-of-competition status for
Sheridan's IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER are :

GROUNDHOG DAY
RUBY IN PARADISE
SCHINDLER'S LIST
THE AGE OF INNOCENCE
THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

A difficult year for the ranking

Indeed : it almost looks like the year 1967...

The Fugitive was the best movie of that year. Still every bit as gripping now, by the way.

Schindler's List could compete for a "Most Overrated Movie of All-Time" award.

I get it now. Wiki refers to it as the English dub. But good call!

The Fugitive is a very good thriller -- one that actually earns the moniker.

Schindler: Overrated in the sense that it is certainly nowhere close to the top 10 movies of all time, sure. I find it problematic in much the same way I find many of Spielberg's films problematic, but it's also a masterfully crafted and painful movie.

    One of my guilty pleasures.
I think perhaps McTiernan was making a bad/good movie and people did not 'get it'.
If you drop your defenses it is really pretty entertaining.

It actually has some cool shots and sequences, and good cast but the movie is so over the top and 'forced'. Not to mention the movie inside a movie gimmick doesn't work because there really isn't a credible divide between the two. It's a very '90s' movie and it tries to cram as much of formulas, cameos and references in its running time. Every time I see it, it's exhausting to sit through.

It's the type of movie that a panel group/test audience would come up with lol.

A worthy pick for the NC: wink

P.S. various artists & original score!

I agree with you, I had not thought of the term, but it is exhausting. I appreciate the ambition of it, even if it was not successful, and I think I liked Arnie making fun of himself.
