BBC America won't be moving forward with Copper.

The period drama, which marked the cable network's first step into original scripted programming has been canceled after two seasons, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The move comes as little surprise, given Copper's rather modest ratings, much of the narrative wrapping up in the Sept. 22 finale and comparatively bigger buzz reserved for the network's other original commission, Orphan Black.

"Copper has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved," said BBC America general manager Perry Simon. "The opportunity to work with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. Their vision to retell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC America's programming. After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story."

Created by Fontana and Rokos, Copper was produced for BBC America by Shaw Media and Cineflix Studios. The sophomore run of the series, which was set in Five Point, New York, saw big cast additions in Donal Logue, Alfre Woodard and Billy Baldwin -- and a transition to a more serialized form of storytelling.

"Last year we had one foot in this gritty story of New York in the 1860s and one foot in a procedural crime show format," Fontana told THR earlier in the summer.

The stateside home of British hits Doctor Who, Luther and Broadchurch, BBC America's move into originals has thus far been dominated by unscripted efforts. Though the network co-produces several efforts with U.K. studios, Orphan Black currently stands as its sole scripted commission.

News of Copper's demise comes just a few days before Orphan Black resumes production in Toronto. The second season of the Critics' Choice Award-winning drama, starring breakout Tatiana Maslany, premieres in the U.S. in April 2014, while the first run gets its U.K. debut on Sept. 20.

Copper starred Tom Weston-Jones and was executive produced by Levinson, Fontana, Rokos, Kelly and Cineflix Studios president Christina Wayne.

I gave up after the first season. Fine cast, but it was so badly written it's not funny. Tops even Falling Skies in that category, and that's saying a lot. Haven't seen Orphan Black, though everyone is raving about it. Just from the previews I can tell it's not my cup of tea.

From what little I was able to see of it, it looked okay but nothing great. I much prefer Ripper Street and hope that lasts awhile longer.

New York - On January 7, 2014, BBC Home Entertainment invites you to rejoin New York's Finest in the final 13 episodes of BBC AMERICA's Civil War-era drama series COPPER, which hits on both Blu-ray and DVD. The San Francisco Chronicle exclaimed COPPER SEASON TWO has "...Action, Passion and Great Performances..."

Set in New York City on the brink of Lincoln's assassination, Detective Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones, MI-5) struggles to tame the wartime metropolis while wrestling with personal demons, including the betrayal of his wife and best friend. And when Tammany Hall's outspoken General Brendan Donovan (Donal Logue, Sons of Anarchy, Vikings) returns from the Civil War to restore law and order in the Sixth Ward, loyalties will be bought and sold both uptown and in the slums of the Five Points as Corcoran, and those around him, fight to find their places in an unforgiving city. COPPER SEASON TWO is from the brilliant minds of Emmy-winner Tom Fontana, Academy Award-winner Barry Levinson, Academy Award-nominee Will Rokos, executive producers Christina Wayne and Thomas Kelly.

At the end of last season, Corcoran left his best friend and partner, Detective Francis Maguire (Kevin Ryan, Tripping Tommy, RAW), for dead after learning of his affair with his wife; his former war comrade and wealthy industrialist, Robert Morehouse (Kyle Schmid, Arrow, Being Human), thwarted the plot by Confederate spies to burn the city; and Corcoran's secret weapon in forensics, Doctor Matthew Freeman (Ato Essandoh, Django Unchained, Elementary), was preparing to start a family with his wife Sara (Tessa Thompson, For Colored Girls, Veronica Mars) leaving behind the demons of her brothers' lynching during the slum's draft riots.

"This season we wanted to raise the stakes and dive into the 1860s political machine by bringing in a Boss Tweed like character to shake things up," said co-creator and executive producer, Tom Fontana. "With the addition of General Brendan Donovan, we reveal a highly volatile faction of old New York City, Tammany Hall, and sink our characters into storylines including, counterfeiting, illegal Union Army recruitment, the 13th amendment and its ramifications for "freed" slaves, public health hazards and more. By making the universe a little fuller, it gave us a chance to breathe new life into the history of this great city."

With Donovan's presence, Corcoran sees a chance to make a difference in his ward. Now that Corcoran's wife Ellen (Alex Paxton-Beesley, Alphas, The Firm) has returned, his affair with Madame Eva Heissen (Franka Potente, American Horror Story, The Bourne Supremacy) is over and he's fighting to return to a sense of normalcy. However, his loyalty to the badge and his love/hate relationship with The Points often puts him back in familiar territory...away from home.

Also appearing this season include multiple award-winning actress, Alfre Woodard (Twelve Years a Slave, Steel Magnolias), as Hattie Lemaster, a former slave recently arrived to Five Points to start anew with her daughter Sara Freeman; William "Billy" Baldwin (Gossip Girl, Hawaii Five-O) as William "Wild Bill" Eustace, a tough and charming Tammany Hall fixer with a genius for political machination; Eamonn Walker (Chicago Fire, Oz) as legendary abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass; Lee Tergesen (Army Wives, Oz) as Philomen Keating, a wickedly intelligent criminal mastermind whose tendency for dramatic flair is offset by a penchant for brutality, and Andrew Howard (Hatfields and McCoys) as James O'Rourke, the physically intimidating yet shrewdly observant manager of a budding criminal organization.
