THE GAME. THE mothereffing GAME.
So, Nicholas is shot at, nearly drowned, defrauded, drugged, deported and driven insane to the point where he - even if accidentally - shoots and kills his own brother. The whole thing then turns out to be an insanely elaborate ploy to get him to lighten up. He, more or less, shrugs the whole thing off. Assuming that someone would even survive such an ordeal in one piece, who wouldn't think of becoming ten times the asshole they were at the film's beginning just to spite the quote-unquote "loved ones" who engineered this?
I honestly cannot think of a more disingenuous happy ending.
An extremely superficial reading of a complex film. For example, who's to say that Nicholas' game is actually really over at the end of the movie? One of the best American films of the 1990s, which gets better and better with each viewing.
Nah, that's not a superficial reading at all. Fincher even said once it was his version of A Christmas Carol, or words to that effect, the point was Douglas' character being "reborn", being taught to love life or something. I think all the complexity is being read into the film where it doesn't belong. Not Fincher's worst movie ( Fight Club has that honor - yes, I hated Fight Club with a passion  ) but it really does have a crappy ending
