"Composers not to joke about" - what kind of thread is that? Luckily, all our FSM ones are eminently sensible... like "What's your favorite letter in the word Jerry" - that sort of thing. By the way, it's R. No, hang on, I can't just pick one. My top five are R, J, Y, E and, ummm.... This was one of my favorite threads too. My favorite letter is the first R. Well just on the first page of that thread there are as many who put DDS at the top or equal first, so selective editing holds no threat to my beetroot soup... And Myaskovsky is nowhere to be seen! That Myaskovsky is not mentioned except by one person indicates how unfamiliar people can be about the hundreds of composers who've existed and don't get noticed whilst the same well-known names continue to get repeated regurgitations. I was just gaining access to the Internet and to discussion forums like this one. It seemed like a wonderful opportunity -- to be able to chat about some of my favorite music with an ever widening circle of fellow music lovers. But my friend warned me off such forums. He cited as an example of Internet idiocy a recent discussion he had seen on the topic of whether Johnny Green was a better composer than Dmitri Shostakovich. Obviously the present thread does not remotely approach that level of absurdity. I've heard only a couple of things by Miaskovsky. Another friend once gave me some dubs from tinny-sounding Melodya discs. I enjoyed the music and would like to hear more. If they had said Soviet composers, I suppose you might have more cause to complain. It's interesting that Dimitri Tiomkin is always described as Russian. He was born in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire, and studied in St. Petersburg.
