Actually, I don't think I'll bother. "Composers not to joke about" - what kind of thread is that? Luckily, all our FSM ones are eminently sensible... like "What's your favorite letter in the word Jerry" - that sort of thing.
By the way, it's R. No, hang on, I can't just pick one. My top five are R, J, Y, E and, ummm....

This was one of my favorite threads too. My favorite letter is the first R. The second is a bit repetitive and doesn't do much for me.

Here's additional input from TalkClassical.com on how some music lovers rank Russian composers. smile

http://www.talkclassical.com/36538-who-you-favorite-among.html

post #3:
"Tchaikovsky. Regardless of the fashionable bashing of him on this forum, he is the greatest of all Russian composers.

Next for me, is Scriabin.

Then Prokofiev.

Then Stravinsky.

Then Rachmaninoff.

Then Shostakovich.

Then Mussorgsky and Rimsky Korsakov.

For me, these are basically the first tier of the classic Russians composers. I have others that I really enjoy but don't rank as highly."

post #4:
"My favorite is Prokofiev. Tchaikovsky is a distant second.

I can easily survive without the others."

post #10:
"Stravinsky had the most variety, the highest number of sheer masterpieces, the highest ratio of quality output to overall output, and wrote the best individual works as well.

I'd put Mussorgsky and Prokofiev on the next tier.

Then Tchaikovsky.

Then Shostakovich and Rimsky-Korsakov."

... so put that in your borscht, Tall Guy! razz

Well just on the first page of that thread there are as many who put DDS at the top or equal first, so selective editing holds no threat to my beetroot soup...

And Myaskovsky is nowhere to be seen!

Zardoz Misspeaks! smile

Zardoz will speak anything and misspeak anything to needle TallGuy's love for Shostakovich.

Of course there are folks who list Shostakovich at the top.

That Myaskovsky is not mentioned except by one person indicates how unfamiliar people can be about the hundreds of composers who've existed and don't get noticed whilst the same well-known names continue to get repeated regurgitations.

At least I got TG to look into the TC site ...

This discussion reminds me of a comment made by a friend back in the 1990s. I was just gaining access to the Internet and to discussion forums like this one. It seemed like a wonderful opportunity -- to be able to chat about some of my favorite music with an ever widening circle of fellow music lovers. But my friend warned me off such forums. He cited as an example of Internet idiocy a recent discussion he had seen on the topic of whether Johnny Green was a better composer than Dmitri Shostakovich.

Obviously the present thread does not remotely approach that level of absurdity. I've heard only a couple of things by Miaskovsky. Another friend once gave me some dubs from tinny-sounding Melodya discs. I enjoyed the music and would like to hear more. But DSCH he's not!

You did, but I'm not over-impressed. Not when in four pages of Russian composers nobody mentioned Aram Khachaturian, who'd be in my top four or five smile

They have the same old arguments that we do, however, so we might feel at home.

"These pieces are the best."

"You forgot to say 'In my opinion'"

"Of course it's an opinion - do we really have to...etc etc"

Possibly because he wasn't Russian? K. was Armenian, though born in Georgia. If they had said Soviet composers, I suppose you might have more cause to complain.

It's interesting that Dimitri Tiomkin is always described as Russian. He was born in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire, and studied in St. Petersburg. A.K. studied in Moscow.

My goodness - what could have caused this very specific...needlepoint?

Did you lose your prom date to the basketball captain? Did Jeff Goldblum brusquely refuse you an autograph? Was Taylor Swift sat in front of you at a Myaskovsky concert?

Ah - you list Jerry Goldsmith as one of your favourite film composers. I sense that we're getting close to the truth now... big grin

And Prokofiev was born in Ukraine as well, but bless you for investing a feeling for such niceties in the population of a music message board!

Excerpt from Louis Jourdan's obituary in today's Times: "He shied away from publicity, living quietly in Beverly Hills, where he enjoyed swimming, croquet, reading and discussing philosophy, while listening to Bach, Wagner and Shostakovich. "
