This just in from Écoutez le Cinéma's Facebook page:

Autumn 2013 marks Legrand's great return to the music scene: two concerts with Natalie Dessay at The Olympia in Paris (October 28th and 29th) followed by a tour through France and Europe, and also his first memoirs, Rien n'est grave dans les aigus, to be published by the Cherche-Midi Editeur. To tie in with these events, Universal Classics & Jazz France has undertaken the most ambitious, abundantly prolific and extravagant record-project ever devoted to Michel Legrand: a 15CD boxed-set which brings together every face and aspect of every domain on the Legrand continent; in other words, songs, jazz, original film-soundtracks, symphonic works, musicals… Some of these CDs operate on the principle of pairing two original vinyl albums — c.f. the historic Legrand Jazz album together with his tribute to Richard Rodgers — while other discs are anthological and correspond to precise themes: international artists who have performed his work; arrangements and original songs; music for animated films… Here and there you can also find surprising guest-appearances, all by artists associated with the great Legrand: Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Louis Armstrong, Yves Montand, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Jessye Norman… and also Alain Delon, singing his previously-unreleased French version of Windmills of your Mind. The classical side of Michel Legrand is also featured in this set through compositions carried by such wonderful soloists as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Maurice André or the divine harpist Catherine Michel, here on an original album — especially recorded for this set — of jazz standards re-orchestrated "classically" by Michel Legrand for a harp and symphony orchestra. The music here, steering a course between swing, lyricism and musical comedy, is an invitation on a journey through the universe of a musical giant, a creator who continues to vaporize frontiers in his love for music in the plural.

Damn, about $60 for 15 disks is a steal. Ecoutez le Cinema does great work. I have their earlier 4 disk Cinema de Michel Legrand Anthology and it's great.

Chris.

On top of the Demy/Legrand set, this has been a great year for Legrand releases.

I'll be ordering.

I'll have it, of course, but really, how many Legrand compilations has this company done? I have the complete Demy/Legrand, and the long box one and I don't think that's the end of it.

If I get this - which I probably will - that means that I have 3 Legrand box sets...and I will probably not need any more...

Well this collection does look to be a bit more diverse than previous Legrand compilations in that it's deliberately not focussed exclusively on film music. Can anyone comment on what this content is like? Some of it (e.g. the Legrand in Rio disk) looks like it's been out previously in various forms. I only have the Cinema de Michel Legrand set and am keen to hear more of his work.

Chris.

It's all his Columbia albums from the 1950s, and unless they're from his personal tapes I really doubt they got the masters from Columbia/Sony - this stuff is, of course, public domain in France - so it's either from his tapes or from vinyl or maybe they did license from Sony - who knows?

If it is essentially sourced from the public domain, that might explain why it's relatively inexpensive...

Respectfully, this goes way beyond his Columbia LPs.

For example, the Richard Rodgers album is a 60s album on Philips, and it is one of the best albums of his career.

And the Stan Gets album is a Verve album from the 1970s.

This looks like a fairly wide, career-ranging retrospective. I probably have most of this stuff on vinyl, but I'll probably get it.

Oh, and "Legrand Jazz" is amazing if you don't already have it, and I can't imagine that anyone who likes Legrand wouldn't have it already.

I have the Getz album on a Japanese mini LP CD, and several of the Columbia albums are also on CD, and Legrand Jazz has been on CD many times. I'm not sure if the Rodgers has been - as I said, I get anything Legrand, but this is the third huge box set from them and it would be nice if they did this for a few others that they haven't gotten to yet.

Also,

if I read well, the first opportunity to get the "Chante Et S'Accompagne" or "Serenades Du 20eme Siecle" lps on cd for the first time (?) is to buy a box that includes at least 50% of previously and VERY RECENTLY released material
"CD7 : Michel Legrand & Jacques Demy" REALLY?????

oops - just noticed the price - instant purchase
still...

Just got my shipping notice for this from Amazon France - should be here around the end of next week. Tremendously excited about this (the presence of the Rodgers album and the Bud Shank plays Legrand, as well as the new Legrand/Catherine Michel recordings more than makes up for any redundancies in my collection)!

That Richard Rodgers album is one of the best of Legrand's career, right up there with "Legrand Jazz."

Let us know how this is. It's on my list, but I had to hop on the Jazz Disques Vogue box set instead (at a ridiculously low price).

I'm really enjoying the Anthology thus far. I'm sort of stunned at just how much of the material I don't have. To make it a bit more "worth your while," even previously released material like "La Piscine" (one of my favorite scores of Legrand's) is supplemented with a few additional cues previously unavailable, and the whole thing is in tremendously improved sound, too! I even think "Legrand Jazz" sounds appreciably better than my old Philips disc (it's not night-and-day, but there's a new additional clarity that I'm enjoying)

Also wonderful is an extended selection of "Castle Keep" cues, as well as "Portnoy's Complaint," which I liked a great deal. The Legrand/Demy disc is the same as the single disc released by Universal France sometime ago, but to me, the material I didn't have on CD more than makes up for redundancies. The Brazilian music album, the bravura Richard Rodgers album (which, together with Legrand's Cole Porter album, now make up two of my favorite interpretations of two very fine composers), and the Stan Getz and Bud Shank albums were instant repeat ad nauseum listens. The presence of more (possibly all?) material from his unused "Le Cercle Rouge" score is another highlight - to say nothing of the premiere of Delon's performance of "The Windmills of Your Mind," with a delightful baroque string arrangement.

As an avowed musical theatre lover, I love the disc devoted to his work there, and as someone who had heard a lot about his "Monte-Cristo" musical (I was doing a production of "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" when he was creating a revised version with Don Black), to finally hear the score in its original form is a source of endless delight for me. I also found his "Michel's Bird" score (found on the animation disc) to be rather charming, and to hear more beyond the song presented on the "Smurf/Munchausen" disc offered up some typically Legrandian charm and effortless melodies.

In short, it's a treasure trove of Legrand, there's going to be stuff everyone has, but its the sterling quality of the new and previously unmined material (and I found the classical-jazz harp disc quite charming and surprising myself) that makes it something special. It's both a perfect primer for those new to Legrand's multifaceted musical personality, and offers up a good deal of new material for those who have nearly everything. The rarities are of such high quality and delight that it more than overcomes overlaps - for me, anyway.

I have that too, as well as other Legrand releases (from ELC and others), so I think I'm set for now. But you gotta admire these guys' dedication!

That Richard Rodgers album is one of the best of Legrand's career, right up there with "Legrand Jazz."

Rodgers is God to me, but "People Will Say We're In Love" ranks amongst my least favourite, the refrain being quite unspectacular melodically.
Now, thanks to the Legrand treatment, it's one of my favourite tracks on the lp.

Other highlights include It Might As Well Be Spring and The Lady Is A Tramp.
Ironically, it's my favourite Rodgers song from the set, "Falling In Love With Love", that I enjoy the least.

I still find a bit annoying that they included complete sets that were previously released by "Ecoutez Le Cinema": the Demy cd, "Communications '72", "La Piscine"...
I can understand that they would not skip the Demy works (in spite of the Complete Set recently released) but I wish they had included a rarity, like the stage version of "Cherbourg".

Speaking of this , the stage/musical cd is spectacular, with the solo song by Nana Mouskouri from "Bistro" becoming an instant classic to me.

Thank you for the track list.
Good news indeed.
I will buy because I couldn't miss a Legrand anthology, but I think there are too much jazz and songs.
I would have prefer more orchestral soundtracks music.

At last a track listing thanks to cdelelee! I twice asked on the Écoutez le Cinéma's Facebook page if the original tracks from The Go Between as in the film were included, they didn't bother to answer me (before I "unfriended" them) and now I know why! I won't be buying this anthology now. I do agree with PatrickB, I too "would have prefer(ed) more orchestral soundtracks music" Still, good luck to those who do get it, there's a lot of nice music here.
