Just rewatched this the other day and was reminded how much I enjoyed the score - which is quite plentiful in the film. Very quiet and melancholic with some bigger string moments toward the end. Definitely enough to put together an album. I'm pretty sure not a note of Nitzsche's score has ever been released. He has no tracks on the song only album. Would love to see Intrada jump on this one.
Nitzsche's NINE 1/2 WEEKS theme most reminds me of John Barry's INDECENT PROPOSAL - which makes perfect sense since they were both directed by Adrian Lyne. Lyne's LOLITA by Morricone feels similar as well. And now that I come to think of it, so does Jan A.P. Kaczmarek's theme for UNFAITHFUL. All of them are based on a delicate, melancholy-ish, repeating piano theme. Definitely must be Lyne's influence in spotting the score.
By the way, I have heard that another Holy Grail Nitzsche score is in the release pipeline.
Cutter's Way, perhaps?
Nitzsche's work, both in the pop and scoring realms, has received major reassessment in the last several years. PERFORMANCE remains a brilliant synthesis of experimental, world music, and rock. It's also the tip of the iceberg for his terrific film scores. His work in pop music is for another forum, but he was far from a Phil Spector imitator: his arrangements were a major part of the Wall Of Sound.
Nitzsche's score sounds nice, but I would have loved to see Lyne continue to work with Moroder, who scored his two previous films Foxes and Flashdance.
I have a rare track from Michael Hoenig's additional score, called "Apartment Ambience".
And this song, co-written by Jonathan Elias, is enjoyable. It got Elias the job working with Zalman King on his next film Two Moon Junction. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnoj7rRkDKc
