Interesting that you don't agree with any of the Academy's winners for that decade. Personally, I think the winners selected for the years '81, '82, '84, '85 and '87 were the right choice.

I can see where you are coming from on most of those, but I do not think Chariots of Fire or Last Emperor were best scores. They are good scores, I own Chariots. But to me there were better scores. In many of these cases 'prestige' pictures won. The Academy loves a Chariots of Fire or Passage to India picture postcard kind of movie, or at least they did at that time. I actually did not realize I disagreed so much until I made the list. On some of them like ET or out of Africa I understand why the won, they hit the right emotional buttons. There is little question that ET is much easier to 'digest' for most people compared to Poltergeist, and likewise Out of Africa. It also helped that ET was one of the most successful pictures ever made. People would disagree I am sure, but often the decisions in one category are connected to a lot of other perceptions about the film, the stars, the director, the themes of the picture.

No love for "The Natural"?

I think it's Randy's career best.

Copying in style from the Cat above:

And the Oscar goes to .....

1980: The Empire Strikes Back (John Williams)
1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark (John Williams)
1982: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (John Williams)
1983: Under Fire (Jerry Goldsmith)
1984: The Natural (Randy Newman)
1985: Silverado (Bruce Broughton)
1986: The Mission (Ennio Morricone)
1987: The Untouchables (Ennio Morricone)
1988: Dangerous Liaisons (George Fenton)
1989: Born on the Fourth of July (John Williams)

With the exception of 1988 and 1989, when I would've nominated and awarded Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Alan Silvestri) and Glory (James Horner), respectively,, the nominated scores included my personal picks for the 1980s. My actual nominations would've looked a lot different, however:

1980
Altered States (John Corigliano)
The Elephant Man (John Morris)
The Empire Strikes Back (John Williams)
The Final Countdown (John Scott)
Somewhere in Time (John Barry)

1981
The Final Conflict (Jerry Goldsmith)
Heavy Metal (Elmer Bernstein)
Quest for Fire (Philippe Sarde)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (John Williams)
True Confessions (Georges Delerue)

1982
Conan the Barbarian (Basil Poledouris)
E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (John Williams)
Les Misérables (Michel Magne)
Poltergeist (Jerry Goldsmith)
Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan (James Horner)

1983
Cross Creek (Leonard Rosenman)
Krull (James Horner)
Return of the Jedi (John Williams)
The Right Stuff (Bill Conti)
Under Fire (Jerry Goldsmith)

1984
Nineteen Eighty-Four - The Music of Oceania (Dominic Muldowney)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (John Williams)
The Natural (Randy Newman)
Nausicaä from the Valley of the Wind (Joe Hisaishi)
Once Upon a Time in America (Ennio Morricone)

1985
Agnes of God (Georges Delerue)
Lifeforce (Henry Mancini)
Out of Africa (John Barry)
Revolution (John Corigliano)
Silverado (Bruce Broughton)

1986
Hoosiers (Jerry Goldsmith)
King Kong Lives (John Scott)
Laputa - Castle in the Sky (Joe Hisaishi)
Little Shop of Horrors (Alan Menken/Howard Ashman/Miles Goodman)
The Mission (Ennio Morricone)

1987
Empire of the Sun (John Williams)
The Glass Menagerie (Henry Mancini)
Lionheart (Jerry Goldsmith)
The Princess Bride (Mark Knopfler)
The Untouchables (Ennio Morricone)

1988
Big (Howard Shore)
Dangerous Liaisons (George Fenton)
Gorillas in the Mist (Maurice Jarre)
The Land Before Time (James Horner)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Alan Silvestri)

1989
Batman (Danny Elfman)
Born on the Fourth of July (John Williams)
Farewell to the King (Basil Poledouris)
Glory (James Horner)
Old Gringo (Lee Holdridge)

With the Best Song and Best Adapted Score categories, I would've found room to award composers like Fenton, Doyle, Mancini and Bernstein as well. wink

Just a simple question - no wet-blanketing intended... Without looking it up, how many of you here would know the winner from, say... oh, 1963? Right, let me check -

Nominees:

55 DAYS IN PEKING (Dimitri Tiomkin)
CLEOPATRA (AlexNorth)
HOW THE WEST WAS WON (Alfred Newman)
IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD (Ernest Gold)
TOM JONES (John Addison)

I suppose that since this is "Film Score Monthly", a lot of you WILL know the answer to that! So, who knew (no cheating)?

And my point is..............?
