Another highly anticipated Norwegian film with great international appeal, this is a straightforward adventure film in the mold of Indiana Jones, utilizing Norwegian and Norse mythology as base.

The score is by Magnus Beite, one of the most promising young Norwegian film composers who previously did the FRITT VILT horror trilogy, among other things.

Very promising indeed. Can't wait to see the movie. Here's the trailer:

Thor, you're not an original after all!! A man named Thor came to my house yesterday to quote on tinting the windows to stop the glare. He was covered in tatts from head to toe!!

Do you know if the trailer music is from the score? Or is it just generic trailer music not actually from the film? What are the chances of a CD release?

I'm liking the trailer music a lot. Hope the movie plays in my area.

I don't know, actually.

There is a second, longer trailer that even shows bits of a JURASSIC PARK-like monster, but I didn't want to post it as I think it shows too much. It can be easily found on Youtube, though.

I'll ask Beite about a possible soundtrack release. I met him once (at a wedding, of all places!) and we've communicated a few times.

(I'm thrilled that the posting about these two latest Norwegian films and scores have gotten 50 views!)

Finally got around to check this out. I actually wasn't aware it had got a release until a few days ago. Although I hadn't really looked for it either.

It's quite a cool score. Very thematic (which is a must for me to enjoy a score), with the use of choir, drums and those "string-rythm--riffs" (or what you wanna call them).

Reminds me a bit of Narnia (the HG-W one(s)) and National Treasure. It does sound a bit Rabin-like (or very Rabin in parts), and Zimmer'ish (that is, Zimmer pre-2004-07). For me that's a good thing.

But it for sure kicks anything from Zimmer & co the last few years in the **... It's way more listenable, and enjoyable, that's for sure.

Too bad it's such a short release (~30 min.). I haven't seen the film, and maybe there's not a lot of music in it, but for that kind of film, it would be strange if it's not at least that much more... I wouldn't mind hearing more of the variations of the themes though.

I think I've never heard this kind of (big/hollywood/zimmer-/rabin-style) "sound" from a norwegian film/score before. If I had heard the score without knowing what it was, I would never have guessed it's from a norwegian film.

I love the film, which I wrote about (in Norwegian) here:

http://montages.no/2013/11/analysen-gaten-ragnarok-2013/

And the score is great too -- especially the main theme which sounds like a cross between Silvestri's NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, Djawadi's GAME OF THRONES theme and Beite's own excursion into ancient viking music!

There's a review of this on some italian site, http://jonman492000.wordpress.com/2013/10/26/ragnarok/, and he compares it, or something, to for instance Williams, Goldsmith, Barry, Silvestri and Howard ... maybe that'll make more people (wanna) check it out, lol

I'm curious, but I'll have to wait until the film is rentable locally or until funds are less tight!

It's on Spotify.

Btw. It seems the reviewer / runner of that site is a user here wink

I just saw the film. Not a classic by any means, but I guess the kids loved it. And splendid norwegian nature, of course.

The music...I liked the Rabin-like theme, but the rest of it just gets too Hollywoodized for me. Sure, Beite knows what he's doing (I guess he has learned it all at school) but I couldn't help but thinking what a less traditional score would have done here. One name came to mind...Erik Wøllo:

Or even Øystein Ramfjord (Amethystium) could have done good here.

I can't quite hear the required energy in those tracks, I'm afraid. It would also be at odds with the type of film they were making. But lovely cues in and of themselves. I could certainly hear them in another setting and for another type of film, washing slowly over the landscapes.

I still think this score is the best thing Beite has done in an action idiom.

The clips I sent could of course not be used for tension or action scenes, these are more in the main theme or collage areas. But I'm sure Wøllo or Ramfjord could fix action too. I don't at all think they are at odds with the type of film this is. Particularly Wøllo has a very norwegian style in his music.

I came to think of it, a band like Seigmen would have been brilliant for this film. Just about anything to get it less traditional and Hollywood, really.

I agree, but then it would have needed to be a very different film. As it is, it's very much molded on mainstream Hollywood adventures with references to stuff like JURASSIC PARK, INDIANA JONES etc. And doing it very well, I might add.

But I'd love to see an 'alternative', Norwegian adventure film with an alternative score as well (although hopefully something more melodic, and not just the 'ambient textures' that are so common up here).
