So - thanks to FSM, the Missus and I disappeared off to Portsmouth last night to watch Nic Raine conduct the RPO (hosted by Tommy Pearson).

Programme was:

First Half:

1) Zulu
2) The Quiller Memorandum
3) Thunderball - Theme Song
4) Chaplin
5) The Black Hole
6) Goldfinger - Suite and Theme Song
7) Somewhere In Time
8) Dances With Wolves
9) You Only Live Twice - Theme Song
10) We Have All The Time In The World
11) Raise The Titanic

Second Half

1) James Bond Theme
2) Out Of Africa
3) King Rat
4) Midnight Cowboy
5) The Living Daylights - Suite and Theme Song
6) Robin & Marian
7) The Specialist
8) Diamonds Are Forever - Theme Song
9) Born Free
10) Body Heat
11) A View To A Kill - Theme Song
12) Moonraker - Theme Song
13) 007

Singers were Lance Ellington and Alison Jiear

The songs were fine (though range was a problem in some songs....Moonraker in particular was a dream though), but the straight orchestral stuff was gobsmackingly good....Orchestra fully on form, "Zulu" sizzled from the off, "The Black Hole" was a joy to hear live, "Somewhere In Time" was just stunning...wow - what a concert.

So - thanks Tim/FSM - this was a belter. And SOOOOOO nice to actually sit and watch a concert for a change rather than playing in them!!!

And - you know what - I've been a little critical of Nic Raine on occasion...no more...saw him in quite a new light last night...utmost respect to that man.

I think Raine knows his onions when it comes to Barry, in fairness. That's an impressive set list, pretty much what I would choose myself. Thanks for posting Greg, glad you enjoyed it.

How did it go down with the audience? Was the hall full?

Audience were very appreciative, though a tad staid for my liking...hall mostly full - just a few expensive seats empty on either side, but they were notably fuller during the second half! (of course....)...a little surprised at how many young people there were...including a big bunch of school children on a school outing (all of them around 13 or 14 maybe?)...

No from me, but the concert is on a mini-tour (Albert hall last night, and Reading tonight) so I dare say there will be some at some point.

Having previously seen Nic Raine conduct a concert of Barry music in Edinburgh with the RSNO in 2000, I knew that this was going to be pretty special. The Royal Philharmonic played beautifully all evening and by any standards it was a strong programme of Barry music.

Loved the Robin and Marian suite consisting of Dawn In Sherwood and the End Title and also 'The Specialist suite consisting of 'Baogata-1984' and 'Did You Call Me'. Also special to hear 'If There Was A Man' ,'Into Miami' and 'Dawn Raid On Fort Knox'. However it was 'The James Bond Theme'that the audience really loved. No surprise then that it was the encore.

John Barry only arranged the JB Theme, apparently. How do I know ? Michael Grade and Tommy Pearson stated it to the audience at seperate concerts over the last few days!. I could have done without the vocalists. Sad to hear Goldfinger reduced to a parody version by an overly dramatic Alison Jiear. You Only Live Twice was saved by some beautiful orchestral playing as was The Living Dayights, which included the Hercules Takeoff instrumental version. In fairness, Moonraker was better.

The concert seemed to be playing to two constituencies, hard core fans, wanting some of Johns's lesser known themes and cues to be included, and more general music fans some of whom know John Barry's music mainly through the Bond songs. I was just relieved that we were allowed to hear the orchestral version of Born Free. Regardless of the vocalists, this was still a great night celebrating the music of John Barry.

Which concert did you see, Peter?

The "Living Daylights" suite is a published one, that I have enjoyed growling my trumpet to (oo-er missus!!) several times...

Are there going to be any more Barry concerts in the South, or have I missed them all?

That's all for now. There is a Barry concert scheduled for Nottingham in February.

This concert sounds like it was terrific. A really great program, too - marvelous variety in its assemblage (and any Barry concert that includes "Moonraker" is more than all right in my book).

A strange question, but about how long did the concert run?

There is indeed - not a million miles away from us (but not spitting distance either). Rather annoyingly, the concert hall is sited at the southern end of Goldsmith Street!

I was all set to go to the Portsmouth one and something came up I couldn't avoid! Looking at that set list, I'm so annoyed I couldn't go. Glad it was good though.
