Some great scores don't really call out for lyrics. Such is the case of Elmer Bernstein's classic THE GREAT ESCAPE MARCH. But that didn't stop Al Stillman from turning this WW2 Prisoner of War music into a jaunty song of fickle love.
Here singer Stephen Van Dorn sight-reads this ditty with pianist Michael Farrell. Rena Strober, Sandy Nuss and a very pregnant Darrah Le Montre lend their thespian talents to this performance.
THE GREAT ESCAPE (March) lyrics by Al Stillman
Here is a link to a checklist of Sheet Music from which this was chosen.
What's best about this song is that you can imagine a company of soldiers singing it as an actual marching song, as Mitch Miller did:
I'm curious, by the way -- there are additional lyrics in the Miller version not heard in the new video. Do these not appear in the official sheet music book?
