Early in the great career of Thomas Newman he composed the score to the Val Kilmer comedy, REAL GENIUS. Even within the context of that film, Newman rose to the occasion lending his unique voice.

As part of a series of performance of obscure movie sheet music, we plopped the "Theme from REAL GENIUS" in front of pianist Mike Farrell, who is a real musical genius.

Despite never having seen this music before, he offered this first glance, sight-read rendition of this sheet music.

REAL GENIUS

Here is a link to a checklist of Sheet Music from which this was chosen.

Hope you enjoy.

That's very nice! I'm long been a huge Thomas Newman fan, and it was a pleasure watching and hearing that. Hope you can post others, maybe after pianist Farrell has gotten to know the music a little more. But he did a terrific job after being entirely unfamiliar with the music. Would love to hear him play "The Farm" from Newman's "Road To Perdition," which is centered on the piano anyway.

Ron,

Glad you enjoyed.

The goal of this particular project was to intentionally sight-read a massive stack of obscure sheet music without rehearsal or polish and capture those spontaneous moments on video.

Perhaps this might inspire others to record some of these pieces professionally in the future.

In the meantime, hope you enjoy the spontan
eity of these first run-throughs.

sheetmusicman:

I did enjoy the spontaneity (and didn't realize that that was the point) and will try to keep an eye out for more such postings. Thanks!!!

Shaun: Because, despite "Despite never having seen this music before..." I clicked to start the video before even reading that line. Teach me to be more thorough before going to intriguing looking links!

I really think we should make a sub-section of the board for these videos. I was joking when I suggested it back when sheetmusicman was wallpapering the board, but I think it's actually a good idea to highlight these things.

Shaun:

Tell me. I'm a Mac guy, and how does one post video (such as the above or something from YouTube) into one of these discussions? I just started something here about a massive Alfred Hitchcock collection of movies on Blu-ray, and there's a wonderful video posted at Amazon of Steven DeRosa reviewing it, and showing brief excerpts from each film. I would LOVE to include a link to that, but, except when I've posted other people's links, don't know how to get them myself. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Very nice clip. It's a shame that the Real Genius score is still unreleased.

I'm the last person who could teach you how to embed YouTube videos into your posts (though it IS really easy). Go to the blue "Special Code Legend" to the left of your next reply and it shows you how to do it.

BRAVO!

Not sure if I've seen all these performances, but this is the first one where I've had the sense that the music was sufficiently complex to mount a challenge to the player - and he nailed it!
