This is one Disney score that we're unlikely to see from Intrada. I saw the 1978 film earlier this year, but Schifrin's music didn't make much of an impression on me. The reviewer at DVD Talk said the following:
"Film score buffs will be surprised to learn that Lalo Schifrin wrote the picture's music. Schifrin was then at the nadir of his career, at least in terms of the movies he scored, if not the scores themselves. Among his other films from this period: The Manitou, The Nude Bomb, The Concorde...Airport '79, and When Time Ran Out."
On the other hand, a blogger at www.manic-expression.com says that ". . . the final confrontation with a helicopter and a broken bi-plane is fairly thrilling thanks to the fabulous music of Lalo Schifrin."
I saw 'Cat' on my summer holidays when I was 14 and it was fun. This and 'Escape to Witch Mountain' (with a Johnny Mandel score) a year or two before that were innocent, goofy sci-fi movies that appealed to me back then -- and the British-made Fox film 'Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World', but there's no accounting for taste! Joe Dante's 'Explorers' captured something of that vibe, although Joe's film put a somewhat more surreal and strangely philosophical twist on the straight-arrow Disney adventure vibe.
