Georges Delerue composed the score to the underrated Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film JOE VS. THE VOLCANO.
At the scoring sessions, director/writer John Patrick Shanley was so taken by one of the themes that he penned lyrics for it on the spot. The next day singers were brought in to sing "Marooned Without You"
Here pianist Mike Farrell sight-reads a first run through of a suite of some of the score joined by singers Rena Strober and Stephen Van Dorn.

TO HENRY- If you have never heard this score before, get ready for your senses to hear a new sound in beauty. Did you ever think how interesting it is in life when you hear something you really love for the first time and you say to yourself one hour ago i never knew about this piece. There is nothing so nice then to really fall in love with something the very first time.Let me tell you the first time I heard this score. I was watching the movie on some cable channel in 1992 on a early Sunday Afternoon when I heard the end credit theme being played in all it's glory, my musical senses just instantly was aroused by it. Lifting those senses to new heights. After hearing it I said to myself when was the first time I heard the music from the SOUND OF MUSIC.how were my musical emotions. it was when I was a little child. That afternoon I decided to make on cassette tapes a bunch of Richard Rogers and Georges Delerue songs and themes together and send them to my niece who was then a violinist who appreciates beautiful music. I also tried to help her stick in the musical forum, but she gave it up and became a surgeon. A more practical profession.Get ready Henry, get ready. Less then 48 hours.

Nice that there are some big Joe fans out there! A very good friend of mine recommended the movie to me years ago and I fell in love with it, in large part because of the gorgeous Delerue score. When Varese finally released the score it was a dream come true, I have since assembled all the music for the film including the great song choices John Patrick Shanley made... they really are an essential part of the overall "vibe" of the film. Without a doubt though, one of Georges Delerue's greatest scores and one that should be available all the time for everyone. If all the world would listen to "Marooned Without You", there would instantly be world peace
