THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24 BIG GAME---movie underway about a shy 13-year-old boy who is testing his manhood in the wilderness with only a bow and arrow and discovers the President of the United States in an escape pod after Air Force One is shot down. The boy must help the President escape from a team of pursuing terrorists seeking to finish the job. Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Stevenson, Ted Levine, Felicity Huffman, Jim Broadbent, Victor Garber and Onni Tommila star. GO LIKE HELL---Tom Cruise may reunite with director Joseph Kosinski (OBLIVION) in this movie based on the book about Henry Ford II, Lee Iacocca and Carroll Shelby developing the Ford GT40 to challenge Ferrari's dominance in international racing at LeMans in the 1960s. INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL---Steven Spielberg took credit for the infamous "nuking the fridge" scene, "I know in Indy 4, you didn't buy the refrigerator and the atomic bomb… I know! I know! But we tried! We tried! I was pushing the envelope! By the way, I take FULL responsibility for that – that was COMPLETELY my idea! Even Harrison said to me: 'Nobody is going to buy this!'" Spielberg said about George Lucas, who had previously taken the blame for the refrigerator scene, "It’s not true. He’s trying to protect me." FIFTY SHADES OF GREY---Jamie Dornan (ONCE UPON A TIME) was picked to replace the departed Charlie Hunnam. Juno Temple and Frank Grillo turned down co-starring roles. SHERLOCK---Season 3 premiers on PBS on January 19. THE BIG BANG THEORY---photo of guest stars Bob Newhart and Bill Nye as rivals which airs on November 7. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2---another faux story in the Sony Pictures THE DAILY BUGLE hinted that Hobgoblin and She-Venom will be in the sequel. BEFORE MIDNIGHT---movie underway about a US drone pilot based in Las Vegas who begins to question his role in remote control warfare against terrorists. Ethan Hawke stars. DEADPOOL---Ryan Reynolds commented on a possible X-men spin-off movie, "[In] its current iteration the movie’s actually very small. There's minimal impact to the studio, which is the way we're kind of presenting it to them. We're saying 'Look, the budget is minimal. Therefore, can we do this the way it should be done?’ Which unfortunately needs a Rated R or it needs those elements. The script is probably available online, it leaked. But it’s very meta, I mean the character knows he's in a movie, he knows he's in a comic book. He names studio executives in the script. So, it’s kind of a risky property...It's actually, within the last couple of weeks, taken a few very, very small tiptoes forward. " He commented on if the spin-off will be made, "In our lifetime? Yeah, I think so. I think if I were a betting man it’ll get made, eventually. I mean it’s just been developed to high heaven. It has great people around it, so we'll see." ROCKETMAN---Elton John biomovie musical underway starring Tom Hardy as John. PEANUTS---animated movie underway at 20th Century fox with a script by Craig Schulz, son of Charles Schulz. Premiere is on November 6, 2015. ARROW---Sean Maher (FIREFLY) will play Shrapnel in Episode 10. APRIL APOCALYPSE---zombie movie underway in which an infected man must save April, the love of his life, from rampaging zombies before he becomes a zombie himself. Rebekah Brandes, Reece Thompson and George Lopez star.

Speilberg: I was pushing the envelope! Oh, please. What bullshit. "Why, what this film needs is a nuked fridge!" Gimmie a break. If Steven wants to push an envelope, how about writing an Indiana Jones sequel as good as or if not better than, The Last Crusade, in today's Hollywood with today's Steven Speilberg. THIS is why we won't get another good Indy film; instead of quality, he feels the need to push envelopes. Stevey boy, if you want to push envelopes, get a job at the Post Office. And try not to nuke the packages. And it doesn't friggin' matter who nuked the friggin' fridge -- it's egregious either person. The two turned a seriel adventure flick with some believable suspension of disbelief into a self-parody and nuked the belief.

A friend of mine will be very interested in Go Like Hell. I'll have to tell him about it. Re: The Big Bang Theory... you know, I like the actors and even their characters, but aside from the establishment of the characters the writing on the show is middling-to-terrible. It relies on stereotypes and the jokes aren't clever. It's kind of neat that it does have so many geeky references (both fantasy / sf and real science), but it feels more as though they're sprinkled around for a stab at verisimilitude, than as though the writers actually really have a handle on geek culture (and worst of all, it's just not as funny as I'd like). I do think Steven Spielberg likely is the one who first brought the fridge bit to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, rather than George Lucas; it apparently evolved from ideas from early drafts of the Spielberg-produced Back to the Future (the time machine was originally going to be a fridge rather than a car, and the power for the return trip from the '50s to the '80s was going to be from an atomic bomb test). But George obviously signed off on it. In any case, though, I did think it was a bit much, but for me it's not the deal-killer it apparently is for others. There are worse offenders in the script, but even those don't ruin it for me, in light of the film's redeeming qualities, and I still love it and embrace it as part of the Indy canon, even if it's my least favorite Indy production. I do feel badly that more people don't enjoy it, though, but what can you do? At any rate, though, everything that people complained about with the script for the movie shouldn't be an issue with a fifth (whether it's the inclusion of aliens or the nuked fridge or just the script being kind of underbaked in general, and written by David Koepp), so I'm optimistic about how one more movie could turn out, if only I could be equally optimistic about it getting made at all.
