Henry, if the Academy members really wanted to award Ennio a competitive Oscar, they could have done it very easily 13 years ago with MALENA. I don't think he stands a chance...
The Academy isn't these 5000 members folding their arms saying, you suck, you don't. There is an ebb and flow of opinion and many winners could've changed if they had been voted on a month earlier or later. Yes, THE BEST OFFER is an unlikely winner but it has had better reviews than MALENA. It also depends on it's competition, what gets attention at Oscar time. Bruce Kimmel's story about Delerue's A LITTLE ROMANCE, the first score where LPs/cassettes were sent to all Academy members for the first time, is an example of unlikely wins. The year of MALENA, CROUCHING TIGER - HIDDEN DRAGON struck some unusual chords in many people, and Tan Dun's win didn't inspire Ennio to complain like the ROUND MIDNIGHT fiasco. I am just saying there is a streak starting and possibly continuing with the right promotion.

It's a wonderful album - Morricone's amazing, still. I hope I get to see the film that goes with it some day.
