I remember reading that Bruce Hornsby was going to score this one for Spike, which I thought was going to be different. I'm perplexed why Mr. Lee didn't nab Terence Blanchard for this project, as he is one of my favorite composers, but Mr. Baños is a tremendous composer in his own right coming off of the spectacular and successful score for Evil Dead so I welcome this one with open ears.

I am really looking forward to hearing what Banos will do for this. I know the Korean original a little bit and the remake looks pretty cool.

Michael Nyman was also on this briefly. He never wrote anything, but did manage to get his name on the posters. Wish we were getting a new score by him, but happy for fans of Banos that they'll have this score.

Well James, that's not entirely true. Nyman did present demos which were rejected by the producers (not Spike Lee). At least that is what I remember him saying on Facebook.

He never recorded a full score.

Ah, you're right. I was tired when I was typing and remembered wrong. Meant to say never recorded the score.

Looking forward to this. Banos is a very capable composer, better than almost ANYONE now "en vogue" in Hollywood - which means he'll never get a megabudget movie, cause these things are decided by money suits with no music knowledge whatsoever. Maybe it's better that way, so that Banos can work on interesting films instead of popcorn fodder for pimply American teens. wink

Not as interesting as I expected - but hey, any score not assigned to the anti-Christ of film music is welcome!

Sounds great! Much better than boring and overrated Evil Dead.

The third track or selection of this suite is really gorgeous. My goodness this chap can write for strings. Easily one of the best cues I've heard in 2013 and perhaps only matched by 'Come back to Me" from Evil Dead. Love his contrapuntal development of the theme that he cycles though. Piano part playing against the beat is also smart.

Surprised to see Spike Lee direct this but looking forward to both movie & score. Thanks for the heads up.

There's probably an obvious answer to this but... I thought Spike never did anything without Terrence Blanchard?

I second that.

Finally score that sounds interesting and in the similar league as his Spanish works except track "I Will Find You" which sounds too zimmeresque to me. I hope this track is the exception and not the custom in the score. There is already too much Zimmerism in film music today.

I confess I have never understood the madness surrounding Evil Dead score which seems to me as another Christopher Young/Marco Beltrami clone score which doesn't achieve the power and impressiveness of Banos' Spanish scores.

No love for this score?

There's at least 20 minute of fantastic material in here that's every bit as good as Banos' overseas work. Don't let the first handful of cues fool you, which aren't Banos' most engaging material, it gets really damn good.

I totally disagree with the assertion some people have put forth around here that Banos lacks a voice as a composer. His lyrical, layered string writing is clearly his own. It can be heard not just in the more operatic moments in this score but also in EVIL DEAD's tragic moments, in THE LAST CIRCUS, in the heartbreaking family theme of INTRUDERS, and I'm sure in others I'm less familiar with. It's front and center of a number of cues here in this score and damn is it a joy to listen to.

Banos is rapidly becoming one of my absolute favorite "new" composers. We're very lucky to have someone like this finally working in Hollywood!

If you like John Scott's "Urban/Orchestral" hybrid scores like SHOOT TO KILL, MAN ON FIRE or LIONHEART, there's a lot to like here in this one.
