Mark, have you seen the shorter theatrical cut of Andrei Rublev or just the Criterion, which features his original cut from before Goskino asked him to cut it? Apparently Tarkovsky is on record as saying he prefers the shorter version, although the comment's sincerity is questionable to some. I'd love to compare the two cuts. Apparently a Russian Blu-Ray of the theatrical cut is available with English subtitles, but it appears to be out of print and I haven't had any luck tracking it down, and there's no chance of a Criterion Blu since the elements of the long version aren't in good enough condition.
I've seen both. I own a Fox Lorber videotape of the shorter "preferred" version, and I've watched the Criterion DVD. I am more used to the tape which I bought over 12 years ago, and only saw the DVD for the first time last year. I would certainly recommend the longer Criterion cut because one gets 20 minutes or so more of the film (it's not as though the internal editing of the movie is rearranged, so it's still Tarkovsky's vision) and the picture quality is much better. This is noticable with the darkened quality of the pagan sequence on the Fox Lorber tape: the Russian censors probably had this done to obscure the nudity throughout this scene. (On the other hand, the darker quality gives this sequence more of a documentary quality/moody atmosphere look. I certainly have no plans to toss my videotape. It's worth having both versions!)
