Hi Dear FSM Posters,

With Christmas soon upon us it's time to start getting into the spirit, and the best way for me is pop in some Christmas related scores.

I saw Santa Claus: The Movie way back in 1985, at the age of seven. I enjoyed the movie but the music didn't make an impression on me at such a young age.

In the mid 90's I started getting into film music, and John Williams was the composer of choice for me back then. The Home Alone movies had just come out alongside Williams's charming scores with songs by Leslie Bricusse. Gingerbread feelings, indeed!

Having re-discovered Santa Claus: The Movie, with attention paid to Henry Mancini's score, I have come to feel that Mancini captured the holiday spirit better than Williams. Maybe it's because the subject matter is centrally focused on Christmas whereby Home Alone movies are focused on comedy set "during" Christmas. But Mancini's music has more of a warm sheen to it than Williams's.

Discuss!

I love all three scores and they are some of my favorite Xmas themed soundtracks. Add Polar Express and A Christmas Carol to the list. I've added Trading Places, though its more of a classical score. For some reason My Neighbor Totoro has a christmassy feel to it. Though it couldn't be any further away from a Xmas score.

Santa Claus: The movie gets my vote. I was so happy last year when the 3 CD came out

I agree with the OP. Home Alone was my favorite until I discovered Santa Claus: The Movie a few years ago (I was actually listing to it earlier this morning). The 3 CD release from Quartet is an all time favorite and a must listen every holiday season now.

Jingle All the Way, Gremlins, Scrooged, and A Charlie Brown Christmas will also be getting a lot of play over the coming weeks.

And looking forward to the three holiday titles Intrada is releasing next week too!

Without question: SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE.
I have mentioned this in previous posts as well – the “Santa” music rivals my personal Holy Grail – John Williams “Superman”.

If – Williams had written the “Santa” score – I’m sure that it would have been a thousand times better than the Christmas “Home Alone” scores. John Williams was at his peak in 1985 – though – his writing style had started to change into the more contemporary style of writing. His golden period was catching up with him. But I’m sure “if” he had received the “Santa” assignment – he would have delivered his magnum opus. He was asked to do this score by the Salkinds, but commitments with Steven Spielberg didn’t allow it to happen.

Fortunately Henry Mancini was there to replace him, and he even brought in John Williams collaborator Leslie Bricusse to write the lyrics to some special Christmas Carols composed by the Maestro! Santa Claus definitely turned out to be Mancini’s greatest Symphonic Score, with the greatest themes ever written in Film History – unfortunately – the movie flopped, and to this day – when I say Santa Claus to friends and family – they always think I’m talking about that Tim Allen comedy! Such is life – this movie is a zillion times better, and it has that special magic, that today’s blockbusters don’t have.

I’m not sure if I should make another thread
…or post here, but if possible Music Lovers – can anyone make out the correct lyrics to “Making Toys” – this tune is undoubtedly one of the greatest themes ever written in my opinion, it has a similar structure to the Superman “march” composed by Williams, and I would love it – if I could recite those lyrics – even if need be – say them rather than sing them at Christmas gatherings. I’m yet to know the correct lyrics, a pity they weren’t included in the liner notes.

Below is what I can make out of the lyrics myself:
The first 2 versus I made out, as the orchestra wasn’t as big (yet).
But the last 2 versus are quite difficult to make out? Especially the big Finale.
The Children’s Choir was used for the first two versus, and then I decided to use the men’s choir for the latter versus. I’ve typed out what I can make out of the lyrics myself, while also adding spaces in the parts where I’m unsure.

If you love this score as much as I do – then please – perhaps you’re music/stereo/speaker system is better than mine – and you’ll be able to make out what our choir is singing. I believe my lyrics are 75% correct. But unfortunately – the parts I can’t make out – is where it’s the hardest – as the orchestra does respectably so – take over, and I don’t blame them, but lyrics should have been included – don’t you agree?
~~~~~~~~
Making toys when you're an elf
Better be good, and you must also use quality wood
Quality must come first, that is an elf's matter of pride
Which, every Yuletide, they provide
They're all master artists when they paint
They've never had one complaint
Colourful work improves, start with some green, yellow and blue
Happily making toys for you
Making toys, tonnes of toys, for a zillion girls and boys
All the toys every girl and boy enjoys
From animals and sailing boats
To dolls with shiny shoes and coats
And toys for boys who like a lot of noise
Sweets and treats for your tums
Made with thousand gallon drums
It becomes one of life's great joys
Elves are here to make your Christmas better every year
They really love making toys!
-------------------------------------------------- The next part is guessing from the men’s choir vocals:
Making Toys this is the thing that ……………..we ignore……………….…. ?
……………………………………………………………
We’re at it all year long ……………………..
Christmas for the next year has begun
We work all the day and night time too
Cause Christmas is all we do
That is to tell you now knowing the skill that it employs
There is no thrill like making toys
Making Toys all the year is a very fine career and we work in a happy atmosphere
We come and …………………………………..
so many different things you know …………………….…… very clear
Though we say so ourselves we are very clever elves
…………………… show a perfect poise
Elves……………… Christmas time is near ……………………..making Toys
FINALE:
Making Toys
(Is it ”Which is the best”) or – WHEN YOU’RE the best? …………………………
…………………………………………..
Every Christmas Eve……………………………………………
……………………………………………………Happily Making Toys, Happily Making Toys All Day.
I ended up thinking about this question a lot after seeing the thread. I would say I take a different road than the OP to reach the same destination. I agree that the movies are totally different, but at the same time the Home Alone scores are vastly more infused with "holiday spirit" than Santa Claus. Williams essentially built the scores around several of his own (brilliant) Christmas carols, while Mancini wrote more of a straightforward dramatic film score with a few nods to traditional Christmas-y elements (and a few brilliant songs of his own). From the outset I think Williams was trying to write his quintessential Christmas score. Mancini seemed more slavishly devoted to his story.
With all of that said, while Home Alone is a wonderful score full of Christmas cheer, I'm drawn more towards the soulfulness of Mancini's effort. There's just a more gorgeously languid flow to it, where Home Alone is by nature more episodic. Home Alone makes for a great album that I happily trot out every holiday season, but Santa Claus is something I can listen to year round.
I never saw Santa Claus: the movie so I don't have that nostalgia factor that many on this board seem to have with it. I listened to the Mancini score and it doesn't really jingle my bell. "Home Alone" on the other hand is a childhood favorite of mine and both Home Alone movie scores I have fond memories of that do reflect the Christmas mood and period I'm more used to; that sense of family bond, holiday joy and even those moments of loneliness, compassion with others and what little Christian guilt the holiday retained before becoming a commercialized mockery. In that regard I find Kamen's Die Hard the best X-mas score right now, somehow a heist movie taking place during X-mas seems more fitting to the holiday for me. Well Home Alone had some of that too... something about robbers and X-mas wink
Another vote for Santa Claus, the Quartet 3CD was the best release of last year !
I have no nostalgia for Santa Claus the movie either but I love the score because I can listen to it all year long once I replace the vocal tracks in the main program with the orchestral versions in disc 3. As long as it doesn't have any Christmas tunes in it (minus one track which I have to skip every time) I can enjoy a score all year long. Home Alone is something I can only really listen to around Christmas time because it interpolates so many Christmas tunes in the music.
Home Alone 2 and Santa Claus: The Movie are still in print and as far as I know there is no information about bot titles going out of print soon. Home Alone is out of print since earlier this year.
Enjoying these scores once again. I don't think I got all the way through Santa Claus The Movie last year. Almost three hours of Xmas delight in one release!
Santa Claus The Movie is a master release from Quartet. I'm glad they put that out as I don't know if any of the other labels would have put as much into it. 3 discs full of film versions, alternates, rehearsals, etc. I know Intrada wanted to do it, but I doubt they would have made it 3 discs with as much that is there.
So while I love Home Alone 1/2, for me its Santa Claus!
I know there's some repeat music here, but I only cut out 4 tracks. Wonderful playlist for putting out decorations, wrapping presents, baking cookies. And yes, Home Alone is amazing as well.
Sometimes I feel like if I had to pick only one desert (winter?) island cue for the rest of my life, it would be "Setting the Trap".
Just listening to the Quartet Santa Claus release and the track "The World Is Different" just came on.....breaks my heart everytime I hear it. Home Alone is wonderful but Santa Claus all the way for this listener. Oh, and I just purchased the movie, Santa Claus The Movie, in HD on Canada iTunes for $6.95 (!) for those interested.
It should also still be available on Blu-ray (Region 1), which includes a 50-minute making of. Quite in-depth.
