Volume 1, Number 29

Strapped for writing ideas this week, I thought I would play a game of composer and celebrity look-a-likes. Over the years I've noticed how some film composers bear resemblances to certain celebrities from the film world and I thought I'd point out a few of the ones that I've seen here. I wasn't always able to find photographs that adequately show the similarities for some, but hopefully you'll get the idea.

Some of my matches may not work for you and that's to be expected. If you have any ideas for matches yourself, please post them in the comments section for this blog. I think it'll be fun to see what people come up with! Here goes...

  John Barry                       Peter Sellers

The age difference doesn't work here, but throughout the years I've noticed similarities from many different angles.

  Alex North                     Elia Kazan

The hair is the main difference here and they actually worked together. Enough said!

  John Williams                                                 Werner Klemperer

Klemperer is more jowly in this pic and is without Williams' trademark beard and 'stache, but I'm going with it. Plus it doesn't hurt that Klemperer's father was famous conductor Otto Klemperer and Werner himself conducted orchestras in pops concerts just like John Williams. That helps smooth out the differences!

  Jerry Goldsmith                       Harpo Marx

I could never really find a good photo match for these two, but when Harpo isn't wearing his hat and Jerry has his big hair look, I see similarities all the time. You may have to stretch your imagination on this one!

  Thomas Newman                      David Newman

Amazing match! Many similarities except for the difference in hair cuts. Hmmmm, wonder how this happened?!

                                                                           Epilogue

The place for quotes, trivia, links, etc.

Quote of the week:  "Although prepared for martyrdom, I preferred that it be postponed."

--Winston Churchill

Video of the Week: Harpo Marx plays the Second Hungarian Rhapsody

  Be seeing you...

That photo of Jerry is one where many think he resembles Jon Pertwee...

I've laways thought David Ogden Steirs and John Williams were a good match.

Howard Shore and NBA coach Larry Brown look similar, at least to me they do.

That photo of Jerry is one where many think he resembles Jon Pertwee...

Both those guys had amazing heads of white hair didn't they?!

Re: Jerry Goldsmith, someone once posted a photo of Dustin Hoffman in Sleepers and there was a decent resemblance. (I think he even had a ponytail but I'm not sure).

Yes, I think Hoffman as Goldsmith and Ogden Stiers as Williams are better matches (I'm afraid I don't really see much of a similarity in your choices here, Mark).

Also, Mark Isham is looking more and more like Alex North every day!

I thought of one more, Patrick Doyle and Brent Spiner.

I'm sure we've had this topic before...

Previously mentioned somewhere else have been -

Bill Conti and Frank Langella

Bernard Herrmann and Michael Lerner (although I think Thor has previously mentioned Marvin Hamlisch as a Herrmann lookalike - there is a resemblance now that Hamlisch has put on the beef).

Oh, the Jerry Goldsmith/ Dustin Hoffman one - yes. I've always thought that. Same kind of crinkly shy smile, and then with the pony-tail in SLEEPERS... (was it SLEEPERS?)

All the old ones are coming back to me - Michael Kamen and Billy Connolly...

Surprised Thoe didn't give us the link to the old thread(s).

Yeah, we've had this topic quite a few times before. For once, I didn't bother searching for the old ones, since they have all kinds of esoteric names.

I met Mark Isham at the Dark Delicacies signing and he looks nothing like North! Are you drinking right now Thor?! ;)

Now North and Kazan could almost be brothers, perhaps not in the pictures I posted, but the similarities are pronounced especially the large bulbous noses (Kazan's got larger and rounder later in life). In fact when I was watching an interview of Kazan in a documentary about him on TV not too long ago I thought it was North at first talking about working with Kazan!

Now I know you've got to see it in Thomas Newman & David Newman for sure!

I picked Michael Lerner as my Herrmann look alike as well, but strangely could never find any pictures of either that worked at all for some reason. He was the first one I tackled.
