Kritzerland has announced two new, upcoming CDs, including a change-of-pace release for the label.

The first film version of George Langelaan's short story THE FLY, released in 1958, is a classic of 1950s sci-fi/horror cinema with its memorably gruesome premise and at least one all-time classic moment ("Help me...") (David Cronenberg directed the superior remake in 1986, with Oscar-winning makeup, a superlative performance by Jeff Goldblum, and a powerful score by Howard Shore that was a creative breakthrough for the composer). David Hedison (billed as Al Hedison) played the ill-fated scientist hero, Patricia Medina played his wife, forced by love to commit one of the grisliest acts in any film of the era, and able support was provided by Vincent Price and Herbert Marshall.  The score was composed by the team of Paul Sawtell and Bert Shefter, who also returned to score RETURN OF THE FLY, the inevitable sequel (this time in black and white), with Brett Halsey (The Girl in Lovers' Lane) as the grown-up son of Hedison who, to no audience member's surprise, manages to suffer the same fate as dear papa, and Vincent Price reprising his role from the orignal. The Kritzerland CD features a remastered version of both complete scores (the out-of-print Percepto Fly Trilogy set also included the score to the final film in the series, Curse of the Fly, scored by Shefter alone).

In 1991, Swedish novelist Henning Mankell introduced the character of police detective Kurt Wallander in the novel Faceless Killers. The Wallander novels spawned a series of feature adaptations starring Rolf Laasgard as the detective, and in 2005 Krister Henriksson began playing the role, both on the big screen and in a series of TV mysteries, with one receiving a U.S. theatrical release this year. Kenneth Branagh also played the role in a recent British series, with the supporting and guest cast including such top names as Tom Hiddleston, Rupert Graves and David Warner. Kritzerland's WALLANDER CD features Adam Norden's music for the first season of the Henriksson Wallander mysteries.

Quartet has announced four new upcoming soundtrack CDs -- a two-disc set of the 1968 romance BORA BORA, featuring both Piero Piccioni's original score and Les Baxter's re-score for the American release (the Baxter tracks are taken from an LP copy); Piero Umiliani's score for the 1970 erotic film LE ISOLE DELL'AMORE; Nuno Malo's score for the 2012 period drama MIEL DE NARANJAS; and Zeltia Montes' score for the 2012 Spanish drama VILAMOR (aka Lovetown).

Intrada plans to release two new CDs next week.

On August 21, Varese Sarabande will release the soundtrack to SAMSARA, a non-narrative documentary from director Ron Fricke in the style of his earlier films Baraka and Chronos, with a score by Michael Stearns (Chronos), Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator, Whale Rider) and Marcello De Francisci.

Buysoundtrax has announced an upcoming CD pairing two early scores by Craig Safan: THE GREAT TEXAS DYNAMITE CHASE, from 1976, and THE GREAT SMOKEY ROADBLOCK (with Henry Fonda and Susan Sarandon!) from 1977.

On August 3rd, 4th and 5th, Thomas Wilkins will conduct the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra performing the music of Patrick Doyle, Michael Giacchino, Randy Newman and Thomas Newman in the Hollywood Bowl event PIXAR IN CONCERT

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

FAREWELL, MY QUEEN - Bruno Coulais

"Katia Wyszkop’s production design is well attuned to the squalor of the servants’ quarters, where mosquitos and dead rats are always turning up, and Bruno Coulais’ score uses sawing violins to usher along the action and summon a sense of dread."

Justin Chang, Variety

TRISHNA - Shigeru Umebauashi

"Even the music, which mixes [Amit] Trivedi’s songs with a beautiful original score by Shigeru Umebayashi (composer for Wong Kar-Wai and Zhang Yimou), reinforces the helmer’s unique approach to the material."

Peter DeBruge, Variety

Much as I hate the term, 'Let Me Be Your Star' is something of an instant classic. I hope it wins.
