Intrada has only one new CD this week, but it's a remastered version of a film music masterpiece.
NORTH BY NORTHWEST was the fifth Alfred Hitchcock film scored by Bernard Herrmann, and it was only fitting he should score the film since he was first introduced to the director by the film's screenwriter, the great Ernest Lehman, who (after the plan to adapt The Wreck of the Mary Deare for Hitchcock fell through) set out to write the ultimate Hitchcock film -- a transcontinental thriller in the 39 Steps vein, with Cary Grant as the slick, shallow Everyman who runs afoul of beautiful, mysterious Eva Marie Saint and witty, villainous James Mason, in an espionage adventure that takes him from Manhattan to the perilous heights of Mount Rushmore. Composed between two Herrmann/Hitchcock masterpieces, his haunting and romantic Vertigo and the terrifying, groundbreaking Psycho, Herrmann's Northwest is one of his most purely enjoyable scores, with a gorgeous love theme and a main title theme that's one of his most irresistibly exciting compositions. This score has been released three times before -- in a re-recording conducted by Herrmann's friend Laurie Johnson; in a Rhino release of the original score tracks, many of which unfortunately had disappointing sound due to damaged tapes; and a Joel McNeely re-recording for the Varese Club. The Intrada Northwest is a remastering of the original score tracks with greatly improved sound, and the non-Herrmann source cues included at the end as extras.
The Film Music Society has announced their first new CD in several years (available only for Society subscribers), a tribute disc in honor of the late Leonard Rosenman. ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND OTHER RARE ROSENMAN features the music from the unsold Alexander the Great TV pilot starring Willam Shatner, paradoxically one of the composer's most obscure yet beloved scores, as well as cues from the popular WWII TV series Combat!, the TV movie Where Pigeons Go to Die, the Disney park attraction Body Wars, and his Emmy-winning Sybil. This disc is limited to 1000 units and is only available through the Film Music Society.
On September 18, Varese Sarabande will release James Horner's epic choral-and-orchestral score for the recent historical drama FOR GREATER GLORY.
MARVIN HAMLISCH 1944 - 2012
Composer Marvin Hamlisch died on Monday, August 6 in Los Angeles of undisclosed causes. Born on June 2, 1944 in New York City, Hamlisch was a musical prodigy who was accepted to study at Julliard at the record age of seven. In his early twenties, he worked as a rehearsal pianist and Broadway arranger and at the age of 24, he scored his first film, writing melodic music in the Elmer Bernstein vein for Frank Perry's film of The Swimmer. This led to more feature assignments, including Woody Allen's early comedies Take the Money and Run and Bananas as well as Disney's The World's Greatest Athlete, but he truly made his mark in the public eye when in 1974 he became the first composer to win all three music Oscars in the same year -- for his original score and title song to The Way We Were, and his adaptations of Scott Joplin music for Best Picture winner The Sting. The same year he won the Grammy for Best New Artist. Fittingly for his stage background, he achieved his greatest triumph with the behind-the-scenes Broadway musical A Chorus Line, which earned him not only the Tony Award but the Pulitzer Prize as well. For the rest of his career, he balanced work on film, the stage, television (he earned Emmys for his original songs and his music direction of Barbra Streisand concert specials) and the concert hall, becoming one of the few artists to win all four of the top industry awards, the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Previously Oscar-nominated for his original song for the movie Kotch, he followed his triple win with an additional eight Oscar nominations. He became the only composer nominated for writing a James Bond score, bringing 007 to the disco age with The Spy Who Loved Me, also receiving a nomination for the hit theme song, "Nobody Does It Better." One of his finest works, the moving and romantic score for Sophie's Choice, earned him another score nomination, and was also nominated for songs from Same Time, Next Year; Ice Castles; A Chorus Line (he and lyricist Edward Kleban contributed two new songs to the 1985 film version); Shirley Valentine; and The Mirror Has Two Faces. He also adapted Pachelbel's Canon for his score for the 1980 Best Picture winner, Ordinary People, and after a long break from film composing, director Steven Soderbergh hired him to pay homage to his memorably zany Bananas music for the 2009 comedy The Informant!.
His work for the musical theater included the autographical musical comedy They're Playing Our Song, based on his then-ongoing relationship with the show's lyricist, Carole Bayler Sager, and he received a Tony nomination for one of his most underrated works, the stage musical version of the cult classic film Sweet Smell of Success. He also wrote the music for stage musicals based on the films Smile and The Goodbye Girl, and before his death he wrote the score for an upcoming musical based on Jerry Lewis' The Nutty Professor. He is survived by his wife, Terre Blair.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
TOTAL RECALL - Harry Gregson-Williams
"The sci-fi-tinged flick set in the near future has the hurtling action of a summer blockbuster. It has chases. It rides on the rapport of gunfire and an incessant score meant to get the adrenaline pumping."
