On February 5, Varese Sarabande will release the soundtrack to the action thriller BULLET TO THE HEAD, director Walter Hill's first feature since Undisputed ten years ago. Bullet to the Head teams up hired killer Sylvester Stallone with cop Sung Kang (Fast & Furious), and the music was composed by Steve Mazzaro in his first feature scoring assignment (he was a sequencer programmer for Hans Zimmer's Dark Knight Rises score). Bullet to the Head should not be confused with Arnold Schwarzenegger's imminent return to action movie stardom, The Last Stand, directed by I Saw the Devil's Jee-woon Kim (part of the current trend of respected Asian genre directors making their English-language debuts, with Oldboy's Chan-wook Park directing Stoker, and The Host's Bong-joon Ho directing Snowpiercer).

For collectors of current vinyl releases who don't want their 2-LP Skyfall to be lonely on the shelf, ABKCO has released a ten-inch, 45 rpm, vinyl soundtrack of MOONRISE KINGDOM, featuring just the five Alexandre Desplat cues and one Mark Mothersbaugh piece that were previously included on the soundtrack CD.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced their latest Golden Globe nominations, including the following film music categories:

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY - Howard Shore

"None of this makes 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' a bad movie. At its best, it recaptures the 'Rings' movies’ breadth, detail, and staggering sense of beauty. Jackson retains the sense of an entire world created on a vast scope for a film. The design is beautiful to a fault; the score is sweeping and energizing. Even without gravitas, Jackson’s work has majesty and beauty on its side."

Tasha Robinson, The Onion

"This pressure, this obligation to stretch everything to the limits of endurance and beyond, is felt from the film's early minutes. Howard Shore's beautiful theme music, reprised from the previous trilogy, filters in. We see the idyllic Middle-earth countryside and are introduced to Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins -- Freeman was born to be a hobbit; he is ideal casting -- and we settle in for a magical experience. And then, slowly, a fatal distance opens up between what we're hoping and what we're actually seeing."

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

I wish to hell they'd put those MOONRISE KINGDOM selections out on a CD. And I dearly wish they had programmed them together instead of piece-meal on the OST CD.
