Film Score Monthly releases its 250th and final soundtrack in a flurry of gunshots, blood-squibs and artfully edited slow motion as the label presents a definitive three-disc set of what is widely regarded as composer Jerry Fielding's masterpiece, his dark and thrilling score to director Sam Peckinpah's game-changing 1969 Western THE WILD BUNCH (no, "Spectre of the Gun" wasn't Fielding's only Western score). The fittingly titled "End of the Line" edition features the complete, 83-minute score on the first two discs, followed by 47 minutes of additional and alternate cues on Disc Two. Disc Three features the cues from the original soundtrack LP followed by demo cues and additional recordings.

Intrada plans to release two new CDs next week.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

EMPEROR - Alex Heffes

"And yet ‘Emperor’’s bloodless presentation fails on a fundamental dramatic level, playing like the fancy version of a junior-high educational filmstrip, down to the false suspense of Alex Heffes’ corny ticking-clock score."

Peter Debruge, Variety

THE MONK - Alberto Iglesias

"Alberto Iglesias’ score is lovely in its quieter moments, but lays the strings on too thickly when things become intense."

Jonathan Holland, Variety

OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL - Danny Elfman

"More often, 'Oz' tilts toward the mawkish, as the sham wizard learns the value of selflessness and an incessant Danny Elfman score tugs so shamelessly at your tear ducts that it would make the Tin Man surrender his heart on the spot."

Scott Foundas, L.A. Weekly
