On October 14, Howard Shore's Howe label will release expanded, remastered editions of three of his scores for director David Cronenberg -- the J.G. Ballard adaptation CRASH (not to be confused with Paul Haggis' 2005 Best Picture winner); his jazz-inflected score for the film version of William Burroughs' classic NAKED LUNCH, featuring solos by Ornette Coleman; and his haunting score for Cronenberg's masterpiece, DEAD RINGERS.

Intrada has announced two new releases this week - a remastered edition of Pino Donaggio's fourth score for director Brian DePalma, the 1981 conspiracy thriller BLOW OUT, starring John Travolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow and Dennis Franz; and the 2012 action comedy THE BAYTOWN OUTLAWS, featuring Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria, music by Christopher Young and Kostas Christides.

On September 23, Varese Sarabande will release the soundtrack to the new mystery A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES. The film is based on one of Lawrence Block's first-rate novels about an alcholic cop-turned unlicensed private eye named Matthew Scudder -- the only previous film incarnation of the character was Jeff Bridges in Hal Ashby's final film, 8 Million Ways to Die. This time, Liam Neeson takes on the role, with one of Hollywood's most respected screenwriters, Oscar nominee Scott Frank (Out of Sight, The Lookout), writing and directing, and a score by newcomer Carlos Rafael Rivera.

Another great contemporary crime writer, Elmore Leonard, will shortly be represented on movie screens by the comedy thriller LIFE OF CRIME, an adaptation of his book The Switch, with Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte, John Hawkes and Tim Robbins. The score is by The Newton Brothers (Oculus), and though Varese is releasing it first as a download-only, they plan to eventually make it available as a CD-R, as they previously did with Atli Orvarsson's Evidence.

The latest release from Kritzerland presents the music from the 2000 Danish miniseries THE SPIDER, scored by Soren Hyldgaard (The Chaplin Puzzle)

The TV Academy announced the Emmy winners in the Creative Arts categories last weekend, including the music categories. Alan Silvestri won two Emmys, for his score and theme for the new version of COSMOS; David Arnold and Michael Price won for their score to the most recent SHERLOCK episode, "His Last Vow;" Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda won for their song "Bigger!" from the Tony Awards; and Don Was won for his music direction of THE BEATLES: THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED AMERICA.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

THE EXPENDABLES 3 - Brian Tyler

"They're on the tail of Conrad Stonebanks, a rogue Expendable deemed super-Expendable after hospitalising one of the crew. He's played by Mel Gibson, who is greeted with a tuba blast of doom every time he appears on screen. We apparently need musical cues to tell us Mel Gibson is a wrong 'un. This is pretty basic stuff."

Henry Barnes, The Guardian

"The tone is set with an opening action sequence: a mission to break out Barney’s old buddy, Doc (Wesley Snipes), who’s been in a Russian jail for years. With a rousing musical fanfare, helicopter action, a train hijack, they achieve their goal."

Philippa Hawker, Sydney Morning Herald

"Banderas plays a commando who desperately wants to be a part of the Expendables, but can't get Sylvester Stallone or Kelsey Grammer (who plays Sly's main recruiter, obviously) to give him a chance. He's one of the three or four best actors in this cast, but 'The Expendables 3' uses him exclusively as comic relief, and he dutifully mugs and vamps throughout. Amusingly, the minute Banderas comes onscreen, salsa music immediately begins playing on the soundtrack. This happens multiple times."

Will Leitch, Deadspin

THE GIVER - Marco Beltrami

"There are multiple quick-shot montage sequences of smiling babies, praying Muslims, crashing waves, paper lanterns, crying elderly people. The music swells, pushing the emotions on us, but the montages have the opposite effect intended. Instead of revelatory glimpses of the rich tapestry of human experience, they seem like Hallmark-collages uploaded on YouTube."

Sheila O’Malley, RogerEbert.com

"Bridges' performance isn't the only careless element of 'The Giver.' Quite a few of the scenes appear to have involved actors acting with special effects that were added later, and not all the performers are up to that unique challenge. The overblown score feels like it would fit better in a silent film. And the logistics of life in Dystopia are inconsistent: Sometimes, we're led to believe the government -- represented by a quietly evil Meryl Streep -- is spying on everyone all the time but, somehow, it's still possible for Jonas to get away with unobserved behavior any time he feels like it."

Chris Hewitt, St. Paul Pioneer-Press
