DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

EUROPA REPORT - Bear McCreary

"The spirit of Kubrick looms large here -- not just in the basic plot architecture, but also in the eerie stillness of the compositions, the balletic motion of model machinery, and the majestic swell of Bear McCreary’s score. (Non-diegetic music is admissible as a dramatic choice of the fictional 'presenters.' Also, because the tunes kill.)"

A.A. Dowd, The Onion

"Another obstacle to taking the movie seriously is that its look and feel are a little too fashionably distressed. The crackling noise, fractured images and data dropouts make 'Europa Report' resemble a Daft Punk music video more than a testament to a deep-space disaster. (Curiously, Bear McCreary's rippling score features violins, not synthesizers.)"

Mark Jenkins, NPR

"However, credit is also due to Director of Photography Enrique Chediak, who captures the claustrophobic atmosphere of the space ship and the bleak, frightening landscape of Europa memorably, and the score by Bear McCreary who blends classical and contemporary sounds and techniques to enhance the film’s ambience."

Tony Medley, Tolucan Times

"The editors carve a clear enough path through d.p. Enrique Chediak’s extensive camera coverage, at times using quick cuts and split screens to playful effect, and Bear McCreary’s fine string-based score is aptly underplayed before coming resoundingly to the fore during the closing credits."

Justin Chang, Variety

"Technical credits are first-rate. Cinematographer Enrique Chediak ('127 Hours') and production designer Eugenio Caballero, who won an Oscar for his work on Pan’s Labyrinth, contribute to the movie’s visual vitality. Bear McCreary’s tense, haunting score is also a major asset.  (Film buffs will appreciate a brief musical homage to Stanley Kubrick’s '2001: A Space Odyssey.') "

Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter

2 GUNS - Clinton Shorter

"The action is helmed efficiently, and with blessedly little CGI, by Baltasar Kormakur, who directed Wahlberg in 'Contraband' but started by making arty little films in his native Iceland. Kormakur's work is well supported by Michael Tronick's taut editing and Clinton Shorter's rousing if predictable ambient-blues score."

Mark Jenkins, NPR
