DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT - Joseph Trapanese

"The movie doesn’t relent much after that, zipping toward the inevitable moment when Tris realizes her true role as chosen one and the contents of the mysterious box are revealed. And it’s a plenty rollicking, respectably grim go of it getting to that point. There are too many fake-outs involving dreams and scary simulations (which take on a much grander scale with the resources allowed by Insurgent’s bigger budget), but otherwise Schwentke creates a steady sense of build and momentum that results in a rather stirring final few minutes. 'Insurgent' trades 'Divergent’'s dreamy alt-pop music for a swelling score by Joseph Trapanese, who collaborated with big-name electronic acts on the 'Tron: Legacy' and 'Oblivion' scores. His music, as it booms and crescendos, lends a crucial weight to the film. We don’t quite feel 'Hunger Games'-level, fate-of-all-humanity importance here, but Insurgent at least makes an aesthetic case for caring in a way that 'Divergent' never did."

Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

"Cue hordes of computer-generated people milling toward the giant wall, accompanied by a crescendoing score that’s apparently meant to represent a victory of some sort."

Genevieve Koski, The Dissolve

"Except for brief location work in the Windy City, the production was filmed in Atlanta, with Alec Hammond’s rich production design bringing the various factions to vivid life, from the rubble of Abnegation to the gleaming high-rise HQ of Candor, whose leader (Daniel Dae Kim) conducts a trial by truth serum that shakes Tris to the core. Louise Mingenbach’s faction-apt costumes never call attention to themselves. The operatically pulsing score by Joseph Trapanese likewise is a fine fit."

Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter

SPRING - Jimmy LaValle

"Fans of Jimmy LaValle AKA Album Leaf may be disappointed by his effective, but low key and familiar score. Despite a few great, ethereal moments here and there (like this this track), it's just a tad bit too subtly employed as a backdrop to all the pretty imagery and mystery, so the memory of it fades once the credits roll. His work is known for its use of electronics, synthesizer and Rhodes piano, all of which is on display in the score for “Spring,” often reminiscent of Michael Andrews’ work on 'Donnie Darko.' The moment where the aforementioned track plays over a lovely, slow-mo steadicam shot as the leads see each other for the first time is highly evocative (without feeling like a ripoff) of the memorable “Head Over Heals” high school sequence from 'Donnie Darko,' the camera floating around and picking up little character moments, introducing the players (and, boy, does the camera love Hilker, who gets a great introduction here). The music is representative of the film, actually: there’s good stuff in it but it hasn’t been honed enough, or realized to its fullest potential. "
