DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
KAHLIL GIBRAN'S THE PROPHET - Gabriel Yared
"That is a problem but not a major one (if only because the animation, though more conventional in nature than in the feature segments, is still nice to look at) and 'Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet' still has a lot to offer viewers -- visual astonishments, a stirring score by Gabriel Yared that also includes original songs by Damien Rice and Glen Hansard & Lisa Hannigan and strong contributions from the vocal cast that, in addition to those already mentioned, also features John Krasinski, Frank Langella and Alfred Molina. For Hayek, this is a personal triumph on the level of her equally dedicated efforts to bring 'Frida' to the screen. For viewers, it is a smart, vibrant and ultimately entertaining film that also serves as a reminder that animated feature films can do so much more than serve as commercials for toy lines and fast-food meal tie-ins."
Peter Sobczynski, RogerEbert.com
"Though the story has changed, the spiritual and more adult musings of Gibran remain intact, whether it’s a meditative segment on love, children, good and evil, work or marriage. The plot is basically an excuse for Mustafa to philosophize, while top-notch animators, all with their own distinctive styles, provide the images. These set pieces, most of them lovely, are by far the strongest part of the film, though some of them get a bit lost in the music, even if both the score and the songs are beautiful in their own right."
David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle
"Bursting with color, movement and originality, these stimulating vignettes deserve to be viewed without Gabriel Yared’s overbearing score and the occasional sappy song. They also merit a sturdier frame, one that’s a little less determined to sanctify its subject."
Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times
"For dramatic purposes, Mustafa has been promoted to a regime-threatening dissident: Kept under house arrest, he’s perceived as a threat to the local government. The authorities announce their intentions to send him home, but appear to have more sinister plans in store, and Mustafa’s lessons take on a new importance: quite possibly the final words of a condemned man. That’s a heavily politicized parable within which to present teachings that don’t feel all that subversive to begin with, especially for younger audiences who might not be comfortable with the idea that some ideas can be dangerous enough to carry death sentences. Still, the tactic elevates Mustafa’s character to a sort of martyr, making every word count -- not that his beautiful aphorisms need the help, thanks to the already intoxicating combination of Neeson’s mellifluous delivery and Gabriel Yared’s score. The final delight arrives in the form of music -- a natural complement to the film’s already poetic source material -- not just Yared’s alternately poignant and playful accompaniment, but also two original songs whose lyrics quote 'The Prophet' directly: Damien Rice’s 'On Children,' which rescues Nina Paley’s otherwise disappointing (albeit trippily kaleidoscopic) contribution, and Irish siren Lisa Hannigan and Glen Hansard’s duet, 'On Love,' which 'The Secret of Kells' animator Tomm Moore transforms into a radiant Art Nouveau whirl, as vibrant as a Gustav Klimt painting come to life. As if it weren’t special enough to hear Neeson recite Gibran’s sentiments amidst such striking visuals, the addition of music further elevates verses that so many have already committed to memory and which a whole new audience can now discover for the first time."
Peter Debruge, Variety
"Gifted film composer Gabriel Yared offers a busy score that works quite hard to assist the storytelling in that central plot, often feeling like something more appropriate to a kid-flick made a few generations ago, when 'The Prophet' needed no introduction. In some of the parable sections, his music all but drowns out the words we're supposedly focused on hearing (Liam Neeson delivers them, as Mustafa). In an elegant tango number, Yared leaves enough silence for the message to come through clearly; elsewhere, one wonders whether some of the parables mightn't play best with no music at all."
John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter
PHOENIX - Stefan Will
"The film opens in darkness, with a car, a noirish jazz score and a woman without a face. This is Nelly (Hoss), a former singer and concentration-camp survivor whose skull has been shattered by a bullet. We never see the damage wrought by that gunshot, only the shame on the face of the American guard who insists the bandages be removed, and the jaundiced bruises that linger after Nelly’s visage has been recreated, not reconstructed, through plastic surgery. In these times there are certain advantages to having a new face, and Nelly -- Hoss -- is beautiful. But that’s beside the point: Nelly no longer recognises herself; indeed, in her own words, she 'no longer exists'."
Catherine Wheatley, Sight & Sound
"As in 'Barbara,' the period detailing of Petzold and production designer K.D. Gruber is vivid and meticulous without seeming florid or unduly fetishized by cinematographer Hans Fromm’s widescreen frames -- a rare period movie that pulls you into a living, breathing world rather than suffocating you with decor. (Shooting was done on sets and actual locations in the Brandenburg region, with some additional work in Wroclaw, Poland.) Composer Stefan Will’s mellow jazz score (heavy on plucked upright bass) strikes just the right woozy, melancholic feel, as does the repeated use of Kurt Weill and Ogden Nash’s gorgeous torch song, 'Speak Low' -- an apt title for Petzold’s own beautifully restrained approach to melodrama."
Scott Foundas, Variety
UNEXPECTED - Keegan Dewitt
"Tech package is terrific on a low budget, with Dagmar Weaver-Madsen’s lensing feeling both intimate and beautifully composed, Zach Clark’s precise cutting allowing scenes room to breathe, and Keegan Dewitt’s downright lovely score all repping major pluses."
Geoff Berkshire, Variety
"The director Mark Neveldine deploys queasy lighting and a trembling score, but his best choice is to let Ms. Dudley stare at us. She conveys unnerving shifts in self-awareness and sinister intent with her eyes. Her flick of an eyebrow or odd change in posture is more gripping than the film’s usual scare tactics."
Nicolas Rapold, New York Times
