Intrada plans to release one new CD next week.

The recent decision of the mainstream CD labels to change their weekly release dates from Tuesdays to Fridays has made it tougher to present an accurate list of new releases each Friday. I try to double-check each Thursday to make sure that the schedule of release in my Friday column is up to date, but unfortunately sometimes it won't become clear that a CD isn't actually getting released until after the fact.

So despite the fact that Lakeshore Records has been remarkably prolific with score CD releases in the last few years, some of the releases they have announced -- Pawn Sacrifice (Howard), Elvis & Nixon (Shearmur), Zoolander 2 (Shapiro) -- were seemingly canceled at the very last minute, so I apologize for mistakenly including them in the CDS AVAILABLE THIS WEEK section of this column. (though Amazon now claims that Elvis & Nixon will still be coming out -- on May 5th of next year).

On the hand, some other Lakeshore releases (specifically Portman's Dolphin Tale 2) are merely difficult to find, while sometimes I've been able to find used/cutout copies of other ones (A Hologram for the King, The Young Messiah) even before their official release dates).

With Varese CDs, I wait until they are announced on the Varese site, since ostensible Varese releases keep popping up on Amazon long before they are actually released -- Ray Donovan only just came out, Jesse Stone: The Ultimate Collection got moved back again, to August 5, and it's been years since Amazon first listed a Varese soundtrack for HBO's The Newsroom, with no actual CD in sight.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

BEFORE WE GO - Chris Westlake

"Meanwhile, when the script isn’t working, [director-star Chris] Evans turns towards the soundtrack and leans on indie rock when he can (and when the low-budget picture can afford it) to attempt to do some of the emotional lifting. But when those cuts includes overused or outdated choices like 'Song For Zula' by Phosphorescent (see also 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' and 'The Spectacular Now') and Bloc Party‘s 'So Here We Are' (used on 'One Tree Hill' twice, Katherine Heigl‘s '27 Dresses'), not to mention a closing credit song by omnipresent soundtrack emotional shorthand Bon Iver. And it’s even more frustrating because the snatches of score by Chris Westlake, when used, are actually quite good and more effective than the safe indie rock selections."

Kevin Jagernauth, IndieWire

DIRTY WEEKEND - Joel Goodman

"Though LaBute himself has rarely been shy about bringing deep-seated sexual mores out into the open, his touch in 'Dirty Weekend' is lighter than usual. The opening-credits blast of snazzy' Catch Me If You Can'-style animation set to Joel Goodman's pastiche of Dave Brubeck's 'Take Five' sets the cheeky tone: a feeling of somewhat randy intrigue just bubbling under the surface, waiting to pop out. If LaBute films like 'Your Friends & Neighbors' aimed to August Strindberg pitilessness, 'Dirty Weekend' appears to be his attempt at a Woody Allen sophistication. But even Allen at his most misanthropic seems to have learned more about actual filmmaking than LaBute has in 18 years behind the camera: Worse than his blandly functional images is the fact that the early scenes, especially, exude the lumbering feel of watching a filmed stage play, given the canned-feeling interplay between Broderick and Eve."

Kenji Fujushima, Slant Magazine

"A 1960s-style animated credit sequence, playing on public-service symbols and backed by Joel Goodman’s cheery lounge-jazz score, sets a jaunty pace for the proceedings, though it’s a misleading one. LaBute trades in tonal and narrative misdirection, and an arch, pause-filled introductory exchange between protagonists Les (Broderick) and Natalie (Eve) makes it clear that, even as 'Dirty Weekend' investigates the possibility of heedless pleasure, the film is not itself a romp. The title is a British euphemism for a sex-oriented getaway between unmarried partners -- though again, true to the film’s evasive spirit, that’s not exactly what’s in the cards here."

Guy Lodge, Variety

SOME KIND OF BEAUTIFUL - Stephen Endelman, David Newman

"So when does it become clear that screenwriter Matthew Newman and 'Starter For 10' director Tom Vaughan aren’t as committed to the pursuit of truth, passion, and idiosyncrasy as their hero? Is it when Richard misuses the term 'begs the question'? Or when Stephen Endelman’s score kicks in with its generic 'this is fun' plucked strings and accordion, all timed to the characters’ gestures? Maybe the filmmakers’ original sin was changing the title from the memorable 'How To Make Love Like An Englishman' to something that has no real connection to the material (or much meaning in general). 'Some Kind Of Beautiful' has a fine cast, but they’re stuck doing shtick. Hayek delivers a sub-stand-up routine about the various kinds of noises men make during sex. Brosnan gives a speech at an AA meeting defending the drinking habits of the English. These are meant to be boffo bits, but no amount of sprightly strings on the soundtrack can make them punchy enough."

Noel Murray, The Onion AV Club

ZIPPER - H. Scott Salinas

"Also squandered here are Lena Headey as Wilson's wronged wife and Richard Dreyfuss channeling Karl Rove, while the intrusive, sinister-sounding score would have been a better fit for a cheesy horror flick."

Michael Rechtshaffen, Los Angeles Times

"Stephens and co-writer Joel Viertel have dabbled in politics and passion before, in the director's low-budget 2005 debut 'Conventioneers'. It's taken a decade to cook up this glossy sophomore effort, and in that time tabloid ink has flowed like Niagara Falls with the public shaming of Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, Mark Sanford and their ilk. Yet there's neither topicality nor bite in this bland pseudo-thriller, which lathers on composer H. Scott Salinas' high-suspense score like shower gel after sweaty sex, yet rarely musters an ounce of genuine tension."

David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter

All of the Lakeshore cds listed as cancelled have digital releases on iTunes. Same with hard to find ones listed in blog. They too are on iTunes.

A Hologram for the King is amazingly good.

My cranky-old-soundtrack-collector policy is to (virtually) never acknowledge downloads in my columns, due to my fear that they'll hasten the (probably inevitable) end of physical soundtrack releases. But thank you for that info.

I still have hopes that most or all of the Varese download-only releases will end up as limited edition CDs, as so far a few have done.
