DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
COMING HOME - Chen Qigang
"In essence a story about a family undone by state forces beyond their control, 'Coming Home' is every bit the solemn, sad tearjerker, complete with a hankie-necessitating score by Chen Qigang and compositionally emotive cinematography from Zhang’s longtime cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding. You want sorrow? Zhang delivers."
Mark Savlov, The Austin Chronicle
"There are some problems with 'Coming Home' -- for me, the big one is the score. (It's built on a pale, wan piano motif that too closely resembles 'My Heart Will Go On.') But I cringe at the word 'tearjerker,' perhaps because I'm never fully sure what it indicates: that it's bad or stupid to cry at movies? That movies that make us cry are cheaply manipulative and thus automatically suspect?"
Stephanie Zacharek, Village Voice
"Less effective is the newcomer playing Dan Dan, whose performance sometimes verges on shrill, even in the context of a teenage girl brainwashed by a repressive regime. And Chen Qigang’s syrupy score is just overkill. But it’s good to see Zhang put the pageantry aside for a moment and provide a reminder -- even if it’s a relatively sappy one -- of what he and Gong can do."
Mike D'Angelo, The Onion AV Club
