DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
STEVE JOBS - Daniel Pemberton
"Boyle is not working with his usual team on 'Steve Jobs,' with a suspenseful score by Daniel Pemberton and cinematography by Alwin H. Küchler. The British director is trying something new here, making a film built almost entirely on dialogue. This is a film made up of what Boyle calls 'gestures' to the real people involved. They aren’t trying to make a biopic here but rather a kind of symbolic, ongoing conflict between the icon and the man."
Sasha Stone, The Wrap
"The movie, directed with customary panache by Danny Boyle ('Trainspotting,' 'Slumdog Millionaire'), is a canny narrative told in three distinct acts, each involving the launch of a particular product and each presented in its own aesthetic style. The unveiling of the Macintosh in 1984 is shot on grainy 16mm film and scored with vintage synthesizers. The introduction of the NeXT computer, which took place in 1988 during Jobs’s hiatus from Apple, uses 35mm film and a full orchestra. And the 1998 launch of the iMac, following his triumphant return to the company, is shot digitally and features a contemporary electronic score."
Christopher Orr, The Atlantic
"Director Danny Boyle ('Slumdog Millionaire') wasn’t the first choice for the material (consult the Sony Hack transcript … or don’t). Turns out he was a smart one, anyway. Boyle’s roaming camera and brisk staging injects a lot of energy into what is essentially two hours of walking and talking, while his habitual drift into too-slickness actually works here in complement with the script’s theatricality. That said, there were times I longed for him to turn down the volume (literally); Daniel Pemberton’s otherwise-excellent score overpowers some of the dialogue, and the way it’s used as a bridge between the film’s smattering of flashbacks reduces moments of epiphany to movie-trailer trope. Oh, but those are minor infractions in a serious film that is seriously so much fun."
Kimberley Jones, The Austin Chronice
"As a piece of consumerist propaganda, and one more entry in the revisionist canon, 'Steve Jobs' is magnificent. Capably shot, well acted (notwithstanding Kate Winslet’s shape-shifting accent), its score propulsive, if a little too insistent, it’s a finely crafted piece of work. But as a film, I found it nearly insufferable."
Jacob Silverman, New Republic
"Much of the craft around 'Steve Jobs' is top shelf stuff too. Aside from the tremendous editing fluidity of Elliot Graham, Daniel Pemberton’s score is terrific and versatile; pulsating with electronic energy, throbbing with operatic melodrama and almost never misses a beat (though some of the third act notes are suspiciously too reminiscent of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score in 'The Social Network') The prevailing idea that David Fincher could have made it better is malarky. His 'Social Network' is impeccably made, but a glorified “Law & Order' episode, and as a clinician, he almost never gets to an emotional core the way Danny Boyle can (plus what would be the upside for Fincher to repeat himself again?). Sure, the film is still incredibly impellent, even without a constantly roving camera, but Boyle motivates the perpetual motion viscera he’s so good at through its potent editing, pulsating score, and the thrilling energy of Sorkin’s rich and layered dialogue, which makes 'The Social Network' look like child’s play."
