DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

VICTORIA - Nils Frahm

"Schipper’s cinematic stunt, assisted by a terrific score by Nils Frahm, gives the film an incredible sense of immediacy and momentum, even if it means that a few sections are slightly dragged out. Some key elements of the story feel born of the world of movies more than of the real world, but ‘Victoria’ is an extraordinary filmgoing experience, raw and exciting."

Dave Calhoun, Time Out London

"Aside from certain sound effects and a gorgeous organ-drone score by Nils Frahm, everything looks to be happening in front of the constantly moving camera with no editing tricks. Of course, there are stretches during the first hour that would have benefited from editorial pruning, such as one interminable scene of Veronica and Sonne bonding over a piano. But the cast acquits themselves well."

Sherilyn Connelly, SF Weekly

"Sebastian Schipper’s low-budget drama about a reckless young girl’s excursion into the world of crime would be an ordinary enough affair were it not for the astonishing fact that he and cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grøvlen shot the whole 138 minutes in a single take, roaming the streets of Berlin to encompass 22 different locations en route. Bolstered by an atmospheric score by Nils Frahm and masterful performances by its young leads, who improvised most of the dialogue while carefully hitting their precisely orchestrated cues, the result is a lively and engrossing exercise in creative swagger."

Lisa Mullen, Sight and Sound

"Subsuming all dialogue at certain points, Nils Frahm’s score is an equally flexible asset, veering from juddering electronic chaos to dreamy intrusions of piano and cello -- a sonic approximation of the alternating noise in the title character’s wrecked head."

Guy Lodge, Variety

"Schipper stays impressively faithful to his purist aesthetic, shooting guerrilla-style in natural light and shaky hand-held close-up. But he sometimes uses music for tonal and textural variation, allowing the electronic score by Berlin-based composer Nils Frahm to drown out dialogue in places. When the gang returns to the techno club for a post-heist celebration, Frahm's soothing electro-orchestral pieces prove especially effective, washing over the throbbing dance beats like a flood of endorphins."

Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter
