This week, as the second in their new We Hear You series, Varese Sarabande is releasing a limited edition "Enhanced Edition" CD of one their rarest and most in-demand LPs, REVENGE OF THE NINJA, with music composed, arranged and performed by Rob Walsh (Young Warriors, Necromancy).

Intrada plans to release one new CD next week.

Tomorrow, January 21st, at 1:00 p.m., composer Mark Mancina and director Jan de Bont will be at Creature Features in Burbank to discuss their collaboration on the 1996 hit TWISTER, with copies of La-La Land's new expanded CD release of the score on hand.

And the following day at 1:00 p.m., also at Creature Features, composer Rob Walsh and director Sam Firstenberg will have a Q&A moderated by Daniel Schweiger to promote Varese's new REVENGE OF THE NINJA CD.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

BONE TOMAHAWK - S. Craig Zahler, Jeff Herriot

"There’s an elegance to 'Bone Tomahawk' that doesn’t let up even when it veers into cult-movie territory. Zahler is a patient director, willing to let scenes unfold, with tension developing organically. He uses music sparingly; the early scenes in town are almost unnaturally quiet, with the moody, minimalist score (credited to Jeff Herriot and Zahler himself) only kicking in once the search party strikes out for the territory."

Bilge Ebiri, Vulture

"It’s in the genre twist that 'Bone Tomahawk’s' lovingly bronzed craft contributions really prove their mettle, with Benji Bakshi’s sunbaked widescreen lensing taking on a seamier sense of claustrophobia precisely when required. There’s a subtle degree of revue-style exaggeration to the pic’s timber-textured period production design and natty costumes, appropriately planting proceedings just shy of reality -- though excellent sound design could hardly be more crunchily immediate. A leanly atmospheric score, co-composed by the helmer, peaks with a hilarious parody of a regional folk dirge that shows up -- like much else in the film -- the shortcomings of Seth MacFarlane’s more innocuous, but fatally strained, Western satire 'A Million Ways to Die in the West.' Among the other virtues of his debut, Zahler has surely found the one-million-and-first."

Guy Lodge, Variety

"Design elements and photography are strong, especially considering what was likely a tight budget, but a key ingredient here is the subtle score credited to Zahler and Jeff Herriott, neither of whom has scored a feature before. Avoiding the usual widescreen grandeur, the sober music portends a noble effort that might come to naught; however repellent the enemy may be, it suggests there will be little glory in facing them."

John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

GOODNIGHT MOMMY - Olga Neuwirth

"It’s the trio of chilly and chilling performances at the heart of 'Goodnight Mommy' that raises the film to a higher level of existential dread. Olga Neuwirth’s nerve-jangling score, and the film’s unsettling sound design do much to induce anxiety bordering on outright, cringing panic. (As does the twins’ collection of pet Madagascar hissing cockroaches.)"

Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle

"However, there's also subtlety and sophistication in the way that Franz and Fiala, aided by editor Michael Palm, toy with audience expectations. The complex use of sound and disquieting music is effective at manipulating the mood within a highly charged atmosphere, alternating between propulsive suspense and transfixing shock, and between images of pastoral serenity with ugliness and violence. While there are echoes of Seidl's work in the compositional formality, the sinuous, sometimes urgent movement of Gschlacht's camera (the end credits close with 'Shot on glorious 35mm') demonstrates that the filmmakers have their own visual sensibility."

David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter
