Reg Powell Alaska Interview

By Roman Deppe

Alaska, released in 1996, was a kids-in-peril adventure film that I was at first only interested in because I liked director Fraser Heston’s previous movie Needful Things (due in no small part to Patrick Doyle's score). Alaska, however, had a composer I never heard of before: Reg Powell. And a close

Vampire Hunter D

Interview and Review by Roman Deppe

I know, FSM already ran a column about the Anime METROPOLIS, which was called the best Anime ever. I have to admit that I haven't seen METROPOLIS, but after watching the new version of VAMPIRE HUNTER D, I can hardly believe there is an Anime out there which tops this fantastic action/horror/love story, be it in regards to animation, imagination or storyline.

VAMPIRE HUNTER D is set in a distant future where man

Music Scores on DVDs Track Lists

from Roman Deppe

A number of DVDs feature the music score isolated on a separate audio track... and a number of soundtrack fans have made lists of the music these releases have. Holy cow, they're like special CD releases when you think about it!

Roman adds about The Dark Crystal: I made up all Cue-Names by myself as the cues are reportedly mostly pretty different to the tracks on the original LP release (which I never h

The Mummy Score on DVD

by Roman Deppe

As so many are concerned about whether the DVD of THE MUMMY features the whole score or not, I thought they would be maybe be interested in the additional cues they can hear on the DVD and how much music was left out from album.

This music is a hidden feature on the new DVD. If you leave the Languages menu idle, the score starts playing -- it's that simple.

I taped the cues, and as you can't pause t

Long Student Film Story

by Roman Deppe

As I am an apprentice editor I had the opportunity to work with a fellow apprentice on a short movie: We just got all the shot material and were allowed to (or was told to) do all the post production the way we wanted to. That meant choosing the scenes, which we would use, edit the whole movie, re-record or change dialogue (though it was an almost silent movie), choosing the sound effects and putting them in and of course c

An Interview with Eckart Seeber

by Roman Deppe

In my article about the movie BRAM STOKER'S SHADOWBUILDER I wrote about the film's temp-track and its actual score, as I had the opportunity to see unfinished, temp-tracked version of the movie at the Fantasy Film Festival in Germany last year. After the release of the movie (aka BRAM STOKER'S DARKWORLD) I

Shadowbuilder: Temp Score to Final Score

by Roman Deppe

Before you folks skip this daily column with the words "I am not interested in movies I never heard of," let me tell you something about it...

Bram Stoker's SHADOWBUILDER is the story of a powerful demon (or better yet, the devil), who is able to destroy the world during a certain eclipse of the sun by killing a young child. The Shadowbuilder is a creature who lives on the life-energy of
