THE ABYSS: The Deluxe Edition
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Alan Silvestri
2 CDs

Another true classic joins the return of our CD Club. Alan Silvestri’s The Abyss is one of the most loved and acclaimed scores of the 80s. Alan teamed up with director James Cameron for his 1989 underwater action epic and delivered a massive work for orchestra, choir and synthesizers. The score features moments of serene beauty, gripping tension, powerful action and utterly glorious swells from the orchestra and choir. It all sounds better than ever in our new Deluxe Edition.

A civilian oil rig crew is recruited to conduct a search and rescue effort when a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks. One diver (Ed Harris) soon finds himself on a spectacular odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean's surface where he confronts an enigmatic force that has the power to change the world or destroy it. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn co-star.

CDs will begin shipping the week of January 6.

Not sure about my math, but looks like this Deluxe release is:

90 min. (complete score in film)
114 min. (complete score in film + alternates/extras)

That just blows me away. The original score release was 48 minutes. Paltry! The original release was a terrific album with all the best highlights but I'm so happy to have the entire score and these very promising extras. This is definitely a must buy for me. The Abyss was one of the very first scores I owned, my first Silvestri; I had the Varese audiocassette back in the day.

Thank you Varese for this awesome release!

It's an important score in my film music fandom -- one of the first that really made me a soundtrack fan in the first place. That being said, even the original release has segments that aren't that exciting (like the militaristic percussion stuff or some suspense cues), and I'm suspecting all the extra music belongs in that category. I'll certainly sample the soundtrack for curiousity, but I seriously doubt I'll be picking it up, alltime favourite or not.

I think the original album is a perfect presentation of the score, but I'll get this if for no other reason than to hear the glorious finale cue in remastered sound smile

Varese don't seem to have any samples on their site and just give an account of the movie, nothing about the music.

They don't expect such huge attention and didn't pay for extra traffic big grin

I bought the original album and have quite enjoyed it, but I'm not sure that I need an expanded release. Are there any highlights I'll be missing if I skip out on this expansion?

This was such a fertile and prolific period for Silvestri: 1985-1995. Of course he's done amazing work outside that window, but I feel like that was his golden age when he composed some of my favorite scores of his, some of my favorite scores period, and The Abyss is smack in the middle of that period that included Predator, Young Guns II, Predator 2, the Back to the Future scores, Bodyguard, Ricochet, Judge Dredd, Forrest Gump...and so many others. One hell of a decade, those ten years, for Silvestri and his film score magic.

It definitely was the period I feel he left his mark and was hot with the hollywood crowd, though he isn't doing too bad nowadays. I listened to the samples of "The Abyss", never owned the score, only saw the extended version of the movie once and can't remember much of it or the score, so I feel I will be going blindly into the abyss smile but it's good to know you like it as that's usually a sign I will too (an early groundhog prediction)!

I'm especially frustrated about no samples for this title in particular. The original album is a fantastic presentation of the score, but will the added material hold up?

Actually, there is a bar at the bottom of the page to play samples of some tracks.

Sounds great to my ears.

Perhaps for you. I get a Cincopa user traffic warning.

Same here. Maybe they haven't put the samples up yet.

They did as I listened to them earlier, but I suspect the traffic was so immense their account with Cincopa reached its limit.

Well from my good ears I can tell that the remastering has really pushed the product a few notches above. Plus I'm curious about the unreleased cues as well as the alternates which I also sampled earlier ( but cant do any more) I think its a definite worth to upgrade it.

I did hear the samples and THE ABYSS sounded really good!

The original was one of the first non-John Williams soundtracks I can remember buying. I'm almost certain I bought it at a Coconuts when I was on an out-of-town trip in the early '90s. They had a great selection of soundtracks there that I was not used to seeing at any other stores.

The monthlong wait is going to be hard to endure, especially if I put myself on a moratorium from listening to the original from now on.
