CD premiere of superb Elmer Bernstein score for landmark CBS television anthology series sponsored by General Electric, hosted by Ronald Reagan.

CD premiere of superb Elmer Bernstein score for landmark CBS television anthology series sponsored by General Electric, hosted by Ronald Reagan. Series ran from 1953 to 1962. Countless great stars appeared: John Cassavetes, Tony Curtis, James Dean, Bette Davis, Alan Ladd, Lee Marvin, Natalie Wood, Fred Astaire, Dennis Hopper, Joan Crawford, Ray Bolger, Joan Fontaine, many others. While initial five seasons utilized stock music, musical director Stanley Wilson engaged original scores for each subsequent episode starting in fall of 1958. Roster of composers included Morton Stevens, Jerry Goldsmith, Lyn Murray, Johnny Williams... and subject of this entire album, Elmer Bernstein, who scored some thirty episodes in new season. In rare move for 1959, Columbia Records issued complete album of rich, stirring music from selected scores composed and conducted by Bernstein in full stereo sound, including powerful main opening "Emblem", closing "Progress" themes. Highlights abound: passionate, powerful music for separated lovers bound for the Train To Tecumseh (Silent Lovers), haunting musical support as David prepares to face Goliath in The Stone (Star Of David, David's Love Song), compelling music for murder in Malaysian jungle via And One Was Loyal (Passionelle), wistful journey into terror, imagination courtesy At Miss Minner's (Lavender Waltz), many others. Complete original album presented in vibrant stereo from original two-track masters vaulted in pristine condition at Sony Music. Original LP liner notes accompany new details from Frank DeWald plus numerous episode stills, reproduction of handsome original cover featuring host & program supervisor Reagan. Magnificent album of music from legendary Elmer Bernstein written just before he embarked on famed score for The Magnificent Seven! Elmer Bernstein conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remain!

Early Bernstein. I've heard the LP, and this is a wonderful listening experience.

Oh, my God!
When I saw the title thread I was hoping for Johnny Williams scores!!
Will you be able to release them?
And for starters, do you know for which episodes did he compose the music?

Sounds great but I wish they could have combined it with See No Evil as a single release considering both are so short. Buying both separately in the same set seems a little steep.

Oh good. smile

(In keeping with the Bernstein theme of the new releases, The Carpetbaggers is the next one to be going OOP from Intrada on September 22, along with The Mountain Men.)

There are gorgeous themes on this release. L'Amour Triste from Nobody's Child is one of the loveliest melodies ever composed.

Great release. I have the reissue of the LP, but the superior sound here makes this a must.

Ha, ha....I was the same as you (i.e. hoping for the Williams scores). I wasn't actually aware of this ol' LP -- I thought none of the music from this show had ever been released.

Anyways, while my interest in this show and its music is mostly related to the Williams part, it's great to see it get a release like this.

I was looking to upgrade my LP rip a month ago, thinking it was already released. It's been available on itunes and AmazonUK as a download, but those are probably also LP rips.
Discussed recently here:

Some episodes can be seen on youtube - I got the impression the LP was re-recordings since the cues sound better and (of course) arent edited for an episode.

Great to have a thread celebrating the release of a long-admired album by a long-admired composer. All very nice except for the blundering comments of two people who are - evidently - John Williams fans and fans of John Williams alone. If it's of no interest to you, why comment? Let people who appreciate good film/TV music by more than one composer and who are immensely happy that this record has now been issued on CD get on with it and go about ordering the album in anticipation.

I think you're misreading things here.

I think this release is great for fans of Bernstein and the show. Heck, I wasn't even aware there was an old LP of this in the first place. So kudos for digging out this lost gem!

But you have to understand that for people like me and Konstantinos, who are hardcore Williams fans and researchers, this show wouldn't even be on our radar if it weren't for his involvement. So when we see a headline like that, we feel it's well worth to point out our connection. I see no harm in that, and no "hijacking" was certainly intended.
