I just picked up a CD of "The Dead Zone." I had forgotten that Howard Shore did not score this one. A couple of questions: Was this released on LP? What were the circumstances under which Cronenberg worked with Kamen? He used Shore before and after this. The only other Michael Kamen score I know is "Brazil." In looking at IMDB, it appears that he scored the kind of films I generally avoid, i.e. 80s/90s action films. He liked rock-like musicians for his films. Lots of great Kamen from the 80's +...search some links here for recommendations...but Robin Hood POT, Hudson Hawk, Baron Munchausen, Die Hard 1-2-3...Lethal Weapon 1-2-3-4.. At this point, Kamen's New Line Pictures jingle plays and DC mentions him. Kamen had only died about a year before at this point. Kamen may have been forced on Cronenberg on this film, but boy did he come up with the goods. Howard Shore is involved in an awful lot of one-off composer/director switches. The Dead Zone is a great score . I miss Kamen.    Posted:   Jul 17, 2015 - 10:37 AM     By:   Pedestrian Wolf   (Member) Everyone's going to have their own personal favorites, but I think Mr. Holland's Opus, The Iron Giant, and Band of Brothers are generally considers his three signature works, and they're great places to start if you want something tuneful and aren't big on the '80s action scores that made him all his money (great though they all are). My personal favorites are Brazil, Baron Munchausen, and his Guitar Concerto, but I think these are all a little tricky to find (and Brazil only works as an album if you really like the film, as it's full of dialogue).    Posted:   Jul 17, 2015 - 12:47 PM     By:   brofax   (Member) The Dead Zone is my favourite Kamen score by a country mile helped greatly by the fact that the main theme is from one of my most favourite classical pieces, Sibelius Symphony No. 2, second movement and this sombre mood is maintained throughout the movie. Highlander...are pretty sweet. Kevin pretty much summed up the story. Cronenberg wanted to work with Shore, his regular composer (and friend). De Laurentis said no. Mr Holland Opus, The Iron Giant, Don Juan de Marco, From the Earth to the Moon (episode 1), Three Musketeers, Lethal Weapon II. Brilliant. It is my favorite as well (tied with Open Range), the way the score operates in the movie is so effective that it's one of those where I prefer to experience it on screen rather than on album. 'Sombre mood' is a good way of putting it, though it does have a sparkle of hope throughout with the love theme and the magnificent "School Days". Which reminds me I still need to get the Australian blu-ray of "Dead Zone" as I really want to watch the movie again. I listened to it, and I have never listened to it again. I heard nothing in it that warranted repeat listenings... HOWEVER, once again here's yet another thread about how wonderful this score is, so I ask all of you.... WHAT AM I NOT HEARING? I mean, it HAS to be ME and NOT the score! I agree that maybe a viewing of the film could unlock what you're missing with the music as a stand-alone listen. But maybe you just don't like Kamen's music full-stop. Score is perfect. Don't like the CD sequencing. I had to rearrange it, into film order, when transferring it to my play list.
