Well, that makes three then!

I can't believe, after five years of being a John Scott fanatic, I'm just now discovering this sumptuous masterpiece - I do believe it is a masterpiece. It's just achingly good music.

John Scott truly is the gift that keeps on giving!

Below is a link to an mp3 of a 10-minute suite I extracted with some highlights, bookended by the end title cue. I used as many portions as unencumbered by sound effects or dialogue as I can - But there are tons of highlights missing, the grand finale not the least of them, and all the action cues and several more sumptuous interludes with dialogue over it.

It's so achingly gorgeous. Plenty of people could have scored this film well or even fantastically, but there's really something special in this. Scott's musical imagination leaves other composer's music just feeling so underwhelming by comparison.

I'm stunned I've never heard a peep about this. How can music this good go unnoticed?

Think Antony and Cleopatra meets King of the Wind. Just incredible music. Hope you guys enjoy!

Good grief, this man's gifts seem to know absolutely no end...

Good Lord! This does indeed sound like a masterpiece, perhaps Scott's best? If this exists at all it MUST see the light of day!!

Thanks for that 10 min suite bobb.
Yes, I also got that King Of The Wind 'deserty' feel from it*.
And Yes, unmistakeable John Scott. Grand. Thematic. Lush.
I hope one of our labels are interested in doing this one..Intrada or Quartet would be cool.

*I also got a Maurice Jarre/Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome vibe from it.

Just listened to some of this. Like much of John Scott's output, it's wonderful! Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention and I hope Intrada notices and puts it out!

This will depend on if the tapes are available and are in good shape, and also if rights from the production/distribution company can be secured.

I've known John Scott since 1987 and I don't recall him ever mentioning having the music from this score.

I asked John about this score specifically on the phone the other day and he mentioned that he's wary of releasing scores nowadays because of the bootlegging and online pirating situation - Can't say I blame him, though if perhaps Intrada or the like were to handle it rather than he himself (JOS Records hasn't released a new album in what, a decade almost?) maybe that would make it a more attractive commodity.

I'm amazed that until this thread was created, I couldn't find a *single* reference to this score online. Anywhere. And yet it's one of the most sublime creations I've heard in a while.

I know the mini-series itself is obscure, but so is the vast majority of films on Scott's filmography.

Musically, I really do believe this is one of Scott's true masterpieces - Almost on par with Antony and Cleopatra, and arguably more thematically diverse than that score.

The main theme is just such a gem, immediately memorable and long-lined and of truly high romance and longing. It's just stunning, evocative, sublime, decadent... From the incredibly beautiful pastoral rendition of the main theme over the opening (strains of Beethoven and Walton and Rimsky-Korsakov) to the Jarre-like, exhilarating and accelerated version of the theme over the end title, it's just a masterful score - and despite those comparisons, it's truly and 100% John Scott music from opening to closing note. And there's so much amazing music in between!

Someone, please, anyone, if you have ANY clout help make this release possible. Were I a wealthy man I'd fund it myself right now!

Since a separate thread about that subject would vanish quicker than it arose, I am so rude to add "Shogu Mayeda" to the request of a (re-?)release.
Well I enter it under the guise of response to the notion that "Harem" would be John Scott's best. That status still lies with "The final countdown" for me but "Shogun Mayeda" might surpass it.

I don't get this notion that because something might be bootlegged, there's no need to even do it. Things are bootlegged all the time: CD's, DVD's, clothing, shoes, purses, books, medicines, films (sometiems before they even reach the theater), etc., and that doesn't stop people from making them.

We have plenty of bootlegging of scores from the limited edition labels and standard labels, every year, even youtube videos of full CD's, yet what do we have? Labels moving ahead full steam, more labels popping up, and I think it was last year MV said they had the biggest sales year ever and that it was hard to keep up.

Scott should just moive forward and promote it properly and send out copies for review, to make certain many people hear about it, not use an empty argument becuase this or that might happen.

Well, this is only a 6 min suite performed live by the now defunct BBC Radio Orchestra with Scott at the helm, but at least it's something from the score.

Easy to say when it's not your money paying for the manufacture of it.
