So, I've noticed a little pattern.
I buy Ghost and the Darkness, and a month later, Intrada puts out the complete film score.
I buy Rambo, and then of course, Intrada gave us the goods today.
I happily bought both Intrada CD's, of course.
But another Goldsmith score I've wanted to own is Rudy, and I'm paranoid of it happening again. xS
Is there anything of significance missing on the CD we have? Any problems in sound quality? Should I wait for an ultimate expanded edition?

Yeah there quite a bit missing from it. Who knows when it will get expanded...
You can get it cheap anyways. Great score. You can actually hear Goldsmith humming along in one of the cues.

But is the missing stuff anything crucial, or just the themes repeated?

There aren't any major thematic ideas that were left off the album. Mostly variations on the themes. The DVD has an isolated score. I'm not overly familiar with the film.

Yeah, there's a cue or two with more unique material, but largely it's just variations on the same thematic material. But all lovely. I made myself an expanded score rip from my complete DVD isolated score and I enjoy it quite a bit; it doesn't wear out its welcome at all. Just a warning though: the Blu-ray version of the film does not carry over that bonus feature.

Since DVD audio is of course compressed, I'm really hoping that Varese gets around to a Deluxe Edition of this soon so that we can have all the lovely extra music in lossless audio. I'm sure they'd sell them like crazy since it is one of Jerry's most popular 90s scores.

Not "crucial" in the sense that the album leaves out any new material, but there are a couple of narratively imporant cues missing.

- The actual main title of the film, which is an elegantly restrained and wistful version of the main theme.

- The swelling variant of the main theme when Rudy finds out he's finally been accepted to Notre Dame. The way it's used here is unique to the score in the way it emerges from a little bed of suspense.

- A gorgeous minor mode version of the main theme that plays over a montage when Rudy is waiting to make onto the gameday roster.

I'd also welcome the traditional source cues, which add nice flavor to the soundtrack even if Notre Dame can go screw.

The thing that makes Rudy different from the other titles you bought with bad timing is this: it's one of those that is controlled by Varese Sarabande in perpetuity. This means that only they can do it, and though they've been stepping up their output this past year or two, Varese titles are still less likely to get expanded soon than titles they don't control (virtually all of the 90s Goldsmith has been expanded at this point besides the many titles they have). So you might be safe buying the short album (or DVD for the isolated track) for now, because in the immediate future I imagine they'll continue to prioritize his action scores (they've recently done Chain Reaction and Executive Decision, with U.S. Marshalls and Air Force One still to go) which have a lot more material missing than Rudy.

If that's the case, could you also buy The Haunting. You know, take one for team wink

Perhaps we need to send a voluptuous femme fatale to seduce executives at Varese into releasing Small Soldiers, The Haunting or U.S Marshalls?
Because c'mon, who really cared about Executive Decision.

I might have agreed more strongly with this a year or two ago, but 1) Varese has been going to the Goldsmith well with its deluxe editions, 2) RUDY is still in print and still very popular (and I would guess probably one of their strongest sellers over its life), and 3) Varese is just about the release a vinyl edition of the soundtrack with all that obnoxious green Notre Dame bullshit on it.

I guess what I'm saying is clearly RUDY has not fallen under their radar, and if form holds with these Goldsmith deluxe releases, I imagine we'll see this one too in relatively short order. It's one of those that might catch on in social media and draw orders from the mainstream like LLL's upcoming FERRIS BUELLER.

ETA: That said, to the OP's original question, despite a few missing cues Goldsmith's original album presentation is glorious and basically flawless IMHO. Go forth and purchase, young man.

I sure as hell did.

This is a truly great JG score and you will love it! But IMHO, the current album representation is more than sufficient - any more would be overkill as the main theme is already used to it's fullest extent (and quite repetitively) in the existing album. Go gets, and enjoy!!

I would buy it cheap now. Why? Because it is my ultimate favorite from him (my opinion of course). And second, like the others said, who knows when and if this will be expanded. I LOVE this album!

I'm a an unapologetic fan of this film's sentimental and heartfelt score. I welcome any and all expansions and/or upgrades from whomever gets it re-issued.

To the original post: I don't know how you can resist this one - I would buy it now if I didn't already own it. Beyond that, if your superstitious cause and effect (purchase = re-issue) idea holds true - you owe it to the rest of us to make it happen! big grin

Is this currently an expensive title? Don't bankrupt yourself, but go for it.

Believe me, I've loved the score for a long time but have hesitated due to my superstition. But the urge to hear "The Final Game" in the car returns here and there, so I caved in.
If this results in a reissue next month, I'll go ahead and buy U.S Marshalls, The Haunting or Small Soldiers to make my wishes come true later!

Please buy Rudy and keep him as far away from a microphone as possible.

I could be wrong, but I think there may be like 20 minutes or so left off the Varese album. One of my favorite scores ever, should be in every collectors home along with THE HEARSE ...

Dammit, you should have bought it months ago!

I think you're on to something.

By the way, RUDY is the only Goldsmith score I ever heard blasting full volume out of a passing car - I gave that driver a big thumbs up! Enjoy RUDY while you drive and pay it forward.
