EDIT: As of July 17, 2019, all [Dailymotion] links are presumably dead, as every single one I tried, was removed because of copyright.

The series was not merely an incarnation, but rather it's meant to follow the original film, only we have to pretend we don't notice the casting changes. But the changes work; Carroll O'Connor is not only an inspired choice for Chief 'Bill Gillespie, but I dare say without him the cast wouldn't have worked the way it did.
Howard E. Rollins Jr. is perfect for Mr. Tibbs.
And David Hart as Parker and Alan Autry as Skinner work wonders and make a strong cast. Each character different, each character defined, and each character is a believably good old boy from the south type character.

For all the episodes I've seen, this is the first time I've seen the entire first season. Every time it re-ran on TV, I was always caught up in something else.

SEASON ONE:

"Pilot: Part I"
By: Dick DeBendictis
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchfv

Highlights:
  • 3:33 in. Simply because it's the first cue of the series and it opens up with the familiar sound of the wordless jazz scat male vocals and acoustic guitar.
  • 5:31 in. Rather similar to Quincy Jones' work for the film.
  • 24:31 in.
  • 32:28 in.

Tibbs: "CHIEF! Maybe you care to explain that I can and will be going into that cell block, or anywhere else I chose, when I chose. And we better get another thing straight: You will not call me 'Boy'. I wanna like you people, and I want you to like me, but there can't be liking without respect, and until there is that respect, you ... will call me ... Mr. Tibbs."

    "Pilot: Part II"
    By: Dick DeBendictis
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchfx (the video quality is noticeably lower)

This is DeBenedictis' only contributions to the series. He'd have made a good regular or semi-regular composer. I wonder if Quincy was even asked.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 10:02 in. Which uses that breathy woodwind sound Quincy used in the film score. And after the commercial break.
  • 28:00 in.
  • 29:40 in.
  • 34:13 in.
  • 35:59 in. Some action music.

Chief: "Way you're lookin' at me, I'm beginning to feel I need an alibi."
Tibbs: "You got one. You took the lady who works at the diner home at six pm, and you stayed with her all that evening."
Chief: Chief takes his glasses off, "Did I enjoy myself?"

The series didn't capitalize credits, including episode names, so I am going to use lower case from this point on with the episode names.

    "road kill"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchfy

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 5:11 in.
  • 11:21 in.
  • 22:48 in.
  • 31:08 in.
  • 39:38 in.
  • About 41:40 in.

"Big city got you mighty inpatient, son. Talkin' take time."

    "fate"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchfz

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 2:20 in.
  • 13:28 in.
  • 19:26 in.
  • 22:32 in. This is the only cue I can recall hearing that inside the episode the words "In the heat of the night" are sung in the score. It's kind of odd.
  • 3340 in.
  • 38:45 in.

Guest starring Nana Visitor (Kira from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine").

    Tibbs: "I figure it's a good idea."
Chief: "Well, I imagine you would, being it's your idea."

"blind spot" (doesn't say "part i" on screen)
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchg0

    Highlights:
  • 2:30 in: the source music for the restaurant that dances around the theme song.
  • 6:23 in. Some chase music.
  • 11:38 in.
  • 15:10 in.
  • 30:11 in.
  • 36:10 in.
  • About 37:50 in.
  • 43:05 in.

"blind spot" (doesn't say "part ii" on screen)
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgd

    Highlights:
  • 1:10 in.
  • About 14:40 in. Action material with a drum machine. The Energizer Bunny on crack.
  • 28:25 in.
  • About 35:50 in. Picks back up at 36:32 in. More at 38:21 and 39:55 in.
  • 44:09 in.

Could this be one of the earliest examples of a character mentioning Wal-Mart in a TV series?

Chief: "I never know what our mayor is talking about, which gives me one thing in common with a billion Chinese."

    SEASON ONE:

    "a necessary evil"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgg

    Highlights:
  • 3:33 in.
  • 13:34 in.
  • About 20:15 in.
  • 24:42 in.
  • 34:33 in.
  • 37:40 in.

Tibbs: "I have enough trouble keeping one wife happy. how'd you end up with three?"
Jeffson: "Well ... you know what the Bible says: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the Earth."
Chief: "But I don't think the Lord meant for you to do that by yourself."

    "...and then you die"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgh ()

    Highlights:
  • 17:36 in: a slow cue with two instruments: piano and some kind of woodwind.
  • 28:50 in.
  • 35:14 in: An unusually dramatic and uneasy piece considering the rest of the episode score thus far (which were menacing synth pieces not worth bringing up).
  • 38:35 in.

And that concludes season one. Moving ahead to season two, you hear.

    SEASON TWO:

"don't look back" (no "part i")
    By: Joe Harnell
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4ibx3r

According to IMDb, this originally aired as a TV movie and was later edited into two episodes. I guess they felt they needed a more "name" composer for a TV movie.

Filming moved to another state and the changes are obvious. Plus, a cast member was lost (presumably with the move).

    Highlights:
  • 15:27 in.
  • 26:56 in.
  • 42:36 in.

Chief "Mr. Tibbs, I will decide what is a waste of your time, I am your Chief!"

"don't look back" (no "part ii")
    By: Joe Harnell
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgk

    Highlights:
  • Nothing.

    "the family secret"
    By: Joe Harnell
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgm

These are Harnell's only contributions to the series. I just don't feel he clicked with the series scoring. I'm glad he didn't do more.

    Highlights:
  • 31:00 in. It's very short, but I like it.

    "the hammer and the glove"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4ijq3f

    Highlights:
  • 12:22 in.
  • 14:33 in.
  • About 40:30 in. There's a brief lull.

Continuing the television series trend where an old friend and/or colleague comes to visit, they turn out to have evil intentions.

    SEASON TWO:

    "prisoners"
    By: Nan Schwartz
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4iq2al (the first minute and-a-half is screwed up and freezes and goes silent at places; this also happens at some random times throughout the video)

    Highlights:
  • 1:30 in. Unfortunately, this comes off a freeze.
  • About 6:00 in. Some soft brass work.
  • 7:04 in: some piano and strings for a mournful-sounding piece.
  • 18:32 in: a soft touching piece with piano and strings.
  • 22:38 in.
  • About 29:20 in. The audio and video shortly before this completely screws up the rest of the video.

Sheriff: "Old sinner, how you doing?" (to Bill)
Chief: "Oh, I repent now and then."

    "hot nights"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgs

  • 38:30 in.
  • About 42:10 in.

    "gunshots"
    By: David Bell
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgu

Bell's first effort for the series. He and Nan went on to be the main two composers for the rest of the series, with only three or four other people showing up here and there.

    Highlights:
  • 2:44 in: Various kinds of fast percussion for an action chase music
  • About 20:44 in.
  • 27:48 in.
  • 30:30 in.
  • 32:12 in.
  • 40:42 in.
  • 41:16 in.

  • About 24:10 in.
  • 27:08 in.
  • 32:40 in.
  • 38:36 in.
  • 43:10 in.

You wouldn't know this David Bell if you know his Star Trek work.

Parker: "Excuse me, the Chief wanted me to tell you he can hear you in his office and he just don't want to." (you got to watch the reaction: 26:42 in)

    "stranger in town"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vchgj

    Highlights:
  • 18:21 in.

In the first season, some townsperson was cleaning the police station, in this episode it's a prisoner in orange.

Chief: "Parker, you're just about as subtle as a shovel full of fertilizer."

    "tear down the walls"
    By: Nan Schwartz

    SEASON THREE:

    "rape"
    By: David Bell
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcj5i

    Highlights:
  • 6:46 in.
  • 15:20 in.
  • 28:37 in. There's a lull.
  • 31:13 in.
  • 41:00 in.

I'm not sure what TV series touched it off, but after some series did, a number of TV series decided to have one of their female leads raped to touch on the subject in their own way of discussion. This series, "Hunter" (the cop series), others.

And isn't Bubba just a little too willing to believe a rape accuser, considering just mere episodes ago two women accused him?

Chief: "Where you goin'? Bubba, tell him where's he's goin'."
Bubba: "Why, you goin' to a cell."

    "fairest of them all"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcj5j

    Highlights:
  • 26:10 in.
  • 38:31 in.

Hey, don't hear anklongs in episodic TV series scoring often.

  • 13:25 in.
  • About 15:30 in.
  • 27:40 in.
  • 31:40 in.
  • About 38:50 in.

There's just something about this on the cheap side score I just like. I wouldn't be opposed to the whole score being released.

    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcj5o

    Highlights:
  • 1:35 in.

  • 24:42 in. Continues at 27:23 in.
  • 33:07 in: a tender string piece with some soft harmonica playing and a flute.
  • 39:20 in. The cue stops for a few seconds (I suspect it was muted and that the cue as made didn't stop).

Another on the cheap score I enjoyed.

Two new re-occurring characters are introduced.

    "crackdown"
    By: Nan Schwartz

The first episode I'll have to skip; no load found.

    Finishing SEASON THREE:

    "citizen trundel: part l"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbe

    Highlights:
  • 1:00 in. A drum-machine lead percussion piece, with some strings (sounds like synth strings to me).
  • 5:45 in.
  • 8:03 in.
  • 25:39 in. More material very much like the opening cue.

    "citizen trundel
    part ll"

    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbg

    Highlights:
  • About 3:45 in.
  • 6:24 in.
  • 16:50 in.
  • 18:02 in.
  • 40:32 in.

Chief: "Did you make that coffee?" after drinking some.
Parker: "Well, sir, this is one of the rare mornings when I did."
Chief: "Once in Italy I got so desperate for coffee I made some in my helmet, using an old sock as a filter."
    Parker: "You didn't."
Chief: "I did. It was better than this."

    And that concludes season three.

    SEASON FOUR:

    "brotherly love" (no "part l")
    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbi

    Highlights:
  • 26:58 in.
  • 42:03 in.

There's a new end credits arrangement, this time with saxophone instead of harmonica. I don't like it. I really liked the old one. Even though each season has had a new arrangement of the opening credits and I didn't mention it, this was a noticeable change.

"brotherly love: part ll" (actually, the on-screen opening doesn't even state the episode title for the second part)
    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbk

    Highlights:
  • 27:01 in.

    "lessons learned"
    By: Nan Schwartz
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbm (the volume level is a little low on this load)

    Highlights:
  • 28:52 in.
  • 32:53 and 34:10 in.
  • 39:44 in.

And thankfully that annoying new end credits arrangement was short lived.

    "perversions of justice"
    By: David Bell
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8YBi9I2wA8

I'm not far now from an episode that had a score rejected. I've asked the composer, since he's still credited in the end credits, if he can go through the episode and see if he can hear anything left in (telling him about my thread here). So, who knows what kind of info' I might be able to add here.

When I first started my currently defunct Rejected Film Scores website back in sometime 2004, rejected scores to episodes of TV series were rare, but over time I've grown that rarity into probably three dozen or more, so it's not as rare as I once thought it was.

    Continuing SEASON FOUR:

    "and justice
    for some"

    By: David Bell
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbo

    Highlights:
  • 4:27 in. Opening with some laid-back jazzy material, then going into some moderate blues/jazz chase music.
  • 16:58 in.
  • About 33:10 and 35:41 in.

Oh, love a good arrogant son of a bitch you hope to get to see get it in the end. Good bad guy playing by the actor William Shockley.

Chief: "Virgil, proud as I am to be the Godfather of your two babies, I must advise you that baby stories are only cute if they're short and infrequent."

Parker: "Good morning, you're on the air," responding to a call from a unit over the CB.
Chief: "Parker! Just answer the call!" yelling, unseen, from his office.

    "heart of gold"
    By: David Bell
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbp

    Highlights:
  • 0:59 in.
  • 10:18 in.
  • 12:14 in.
  • 15:28 in.
  • 2813 in.
  • 35:47 in.
  • 36:31 in. The slow and delicate cue goes on for five minutes.

These last two scores, Bell has been playing around with the way he does the blues material, resulting in nice pieces like the 10:18 example.

I wouldn't be opposed to the full score being released.

Bubba: "You don't know how much I was hopin' you wouldn't show up here..."

    "quick fix"
    By: Larry Blank
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbq
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXOElO8glIc

This is Blank's first effort for the series.
Blank hasn't done very much composing for film and TV, looking over his website an IMDb page. He's orchestrated on some Marc Shaiman scores.

    "homecoming"
    By: Nan Schwartz

    NO LOAD FOUND.
The one up is mislabeled and is from season five, titled "Family Reunion".

    "a problem too
    personal"

    By: David Bell
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbf

    Highlights:
  • 1:00 in.
  • 4:02 in.
  • 35:14 in.
  • 42:01 in. Not so great in the start, but it gets better with the strings and piano further in.

    "a final
    arrangement"

    By: David Bell
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjbh (the volume on this one is quite low)

    Highlights:
  • About 3:20 in.
  • 27:25 in.
  • 34:29 in.
  • About 38:30 and 40:36 in.

This is the second time in two or three seasons it's been mentioned Bubba was a sergeant. Still no explanation given for why he lost them and was demoted.

Tibbs: "Now, honey, don't burn anything else for me, I gotta run."

Bubba: "Well, I'd like to make my observation: the boy is dumb."

Bubba: "You a little innocent sometimes, ain't ya, Virgil?"
Chief: "Well, he's naive, you know? Naive."

I stumbled upon that back in 2014 Showtime was developing a new TV series. I don't know what happened or if a pilot was filmed, but some things have changed and as of 2017 they are apparently not only still developing it but foregoing a pilot and having scripts written to go directly to series.

Much like my fears of two other TV series which were re-vived, which were proven to have been correct, I fear this new iteration will be a load of crap to push certain beliefs and agendas.
The time for a series like this has passed, and they certainly aren't going to do better than Carol O'Connor. Leave it alone, I say.

  • About 34:01 in.

    Highlights:
  • 6:13 in.
  • 15:23 in.
  • 21:45 in.

I got to make a special note to the amusing back and forth conversation with the Chief and the hired assassin at the end. Only on a show like this. :-)

    "blessings"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjhz

    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcji1

    Highlights:
  • 1:30 in.
  • 11:03 in. A short commercial bumper piece. I don't remember ever seeing these in re-runs.
  • 11:21 in.
  • 32:27 in.

  • 28:02 in.

Chief: "It can't be good news at this time of night."

  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:58 in.
  • 17:30 in.
  • 20:54/22:00 in.
  • 28:00 in. A tender piano and strings cue. Lovely stuff. A short bit more at 38:17 in.
  • 35:57 in.

This episode shows you how to piece together a case when your only witness is blind and only heard the attack.

    "first deadly sin"
    By: David Bell
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjia

    Highlights:

  • 22:05 in. I just like this kind of stuff; can't speak for everybody else.

    "just a country boy"
    By: David Bell
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjib

    Highlights:

  • 8:34 in. Also something different.
  • 28:15 in.
  • About 39:38 in.
  • 41:32 in.

Chief: "How do you know it's his land lady?"
Parker: "She always calls me 'jackass'."

    "no other road"
    By: Larry Blank

There is no point in linking to the video. Even though he is credited in the end credits, his score was rejected for being too "melodic". The episode was tracked with existing cues from Bell and Schwartz.

I sent Mr. Blank a link to he video to see if he could hear any cues by him left in and he said he'd take a look; he says he's pretty sure all of it was dumped. I guess they were too cheap to pay to change the credit once it was made.

On a related note, Mr. Blank has allowed me to share a brief story:
He was told that Carol O'Connor told the producers that his score to "quick fix" was one of his favorites. High praise, sure enough. :-)

    "a turning"
    By: Nan Schwartz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjie

    Highlights:
  • 6:30/8:57/10:35 in.
  • 20:37 in.
  • 3510 in.
  • 39:40 in.

I wouldn't be opposed to the whole score being released.

Man, some of these episode loads have the commercial promos for the episode before them, and they sure did bullshit the audience with these! This is yet another bullshit promo.

Bubba: "Excuse me, (name I can't make out), I got to get to the phone there."
    Bar Employee: "It's our phone."
Bubba: "Yeah. Yeah it is. You gonna be a nice guy and let me use it, ain't'cha?"
Sweet: "You know, if we had you up at the station, we'd let you use our phone."
Bubba: "Would you like to go to the station?"

    And that concludes season four.

  • 22:18 in.
  • 24:28 in.

Bubba mentions Parker has also lose stripes as well.

    Chief supposedly has a daughter.

    Highlights:
  • 33:01 in.
  • 37:10 in. Some car chase music. More at 40:08 in.

Carol O'Connor's delivery is getting slow and paced out. I wonder if he had a medical incident that took his health down a notch.

  • 37:04 in.
  • 40:30 in.
  • About 42:20 in.

Bubba acknowledges how he treated Virgil back in the short season one. How the force was back during that season and what it became in season two, was just sort og glanced over until now (except a flash back of a character that vanished after season one ended). It is in my opinion, that at least half a year lapsed in-verse time between season one and season two, though characters on screen not only don't say that but even make it out in season four to have been shorter than four years.

More jazzy than normal, with some different ideas than previous scores, and some sax' thrown into the mix.

    "sparta gold"
    By: David Bell
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5vcjim

    Highlights:

  • 22:46 in.
  • 26:45 in.
  • 34:05 in.
  • 35:58/37:50 in.

This is like the third episode score work in a musical reframe from the song "On the Road Again"; the "the road again". Mike Post & Pete Carpenter also did that in a cue from "Hunter". It's probably just a coincidence, but the song was just a mere few years earlier.

    "family reunion"
    By: Nan Schwartz

This episode score was nominated for a prime time Emmy, but didn't win. This is the only episode score to get a nomination. Other nominees:

    "Matlock"
    Episode: "The Strangler"
    Composer: Bruce Babcock
    (WINNER)

    "Star Trek: The Next Generation"
    Episode: "Unification: Part 1"
    Composer: Dennis McCarthy

    "The Simpsons"
    Episode: "Treehouse of Horror II"
    Composer: Alf Clausen

  • 40:00 in.
  • 43:36 in.

Think ItHotN ideas mixed into the closing "Seinfeld" music.
It's enjoyable, but she's certainly done better for the series. Why this one and no other episode scores nominated? Or other composers' episode scores?

Insurance Man: "People are going to say you're odd."
Chief: "That's what they do say."
Insurance Man: "Some will say you're crazy."
Chief: "Yeah, they'll say that, too."

    "sanctuary"

  • 25:58 in.
  • 29:47 in.
  • 33:08 in.
  • 34:35 in. This must be one of the few rare uses of snare drum in the series' scoring.

There is a cue titled "Sanctuary" in her website, and it's clearly from this score, but it doesn't fit anywhere. Part of the opening is from the last time stamp I cite, and other parts sounds like they are parts from other parts of cues. Maybe it's an edit job on her site.

  • 11:38 in.

  • 38:27 in.
  • 41:11 in.

I can't tell how much of the music is new material or re-used score from the previous episode, since there are plenty of flashbacks.

This is the second time we've heard Chief listening to classical music. Apparently that's what his character likes.

    And that concludes season five.
