I'm shocked you didn't mention Forever Knight when talking about Fred Mollin...

Because I was thinking of the time when I met him, and he hadn't done that yet!

"Hyper Space" is my second favorite cue from ESB after "The Snow Battle". Ruined in the Special Edition because it goes into a loop so Lucas could add needless scenes of Darth shuttling back to his command ship.

"Enterprise Attacks Reliant" was the one missing cue from the OST I wanted the most, so thank you so much for making that possible.

And I agree don't get the composers involved in releases! I respect their work but fans are a fickle lot. We know what we love. An artist may not see the value in something they created where fans do.

I totally agree that the 70's and 80's (and early 90's) were the best times for action adventure/sci fi films where strong characters and stories were equal to the visual spectacle put on screen.

I'll also echo my favorite scores are those where every note is important.

Unless I fell asleep during this one and missed it, you weren't as gossipy as you were on that other podcast you did (where you told the driving the Star Trek tapes story in full). We need to get you on The Goldsmith Odyssey to unleash some catty Bruce Kimmel-esque tales.

I can just see Lukas' face as he realises he's not just got a chunk of Barry Bond in extension compared to what originally went out in limited form on vinyl, but 1st gen to boot! As if 2nd gen would have been great to press, but HOLY SMOKE!!!

It's just one of those things. Anyone not savvy with this stuff buying the extended Bonds won't actually realise what they've got in their hands until the penny eventually drops, if it does at all.

Heh heh heh...we’ve had plans for Lukas to join us on The Goldsmith Odyssey for almost a year now. If we’d held to our original schedule we would have already arrived at Dr. Kildare and Cain’s Hundred, and had him on. At this point after being pipped to the post like this, I’m thinking of maybe doing a one on one interview with him, in advance of his appearance on the regular show as a guest host.

Who, moi? What I would ask is - what generation tapes would have been used for the Original Soundtrack Recording? Would they have been the same first generation tapes Lukas was so lucky to have got his hands on for the remastered set of Bonds?

No, I wasn't...that Star Trek podcast was different because I've known those guys socially for decades and felt more comfortable to be weird with them. I didn't want to be disrespectful to Frank's questions or his show.

I wondered what happened with that! Sure, I'll do your show anytime.

Yup, and my stupid phone's autocorrect of "pipped" to "popped" is preserved for all eternity. big grin

By the way Shaun, if you're dying for cool behind the scenes with another prominent label head after Bruce, I *did* just happen to record a new conversation with one yesterday...at record length, for an Odyssey Interview -- at 3.5 hours+, more than double the length of the David Newman interview which was already really long, so we'll be splitting it into at least two parts. More later (but not in this Lukas thread).

Lukas, I loved listening to this conversation! (I still have to listen to part 2 on Bond). You're very engaging and it's always fun hearing you talk, so I'm really looking forward to having you on the Odyssey.

Holy cow. Any Inside Baseball talk is welcome, as far as I'm concerned. The look behind the scenes really informs my listening of the end result.

Beautifully done. Loved it.

Back in 2003, I remember interviewing Lukas for Music From The Movies about the Bond set and in my stupid, immature, arrogant attempt to mimic a BBC journalist who describes his interviews narratively, like he's talking about the interview rather than giving the literal Q&A, I remember I really pissed Lukas off and rewrote it properly.

I think he forgave me though:

I remember he ran my review of Monte Walsh, because I wrote a nice review of that but was beaten to the punch by other writers for my usual outlets (Soundtrack and MFTM), so I had no outlet for it and he gave me one. He was also kind enough to give me the opportunity to contribute to the first KING KONG release on FSM.

It's funny. In so many ways, I feel like that even though I'm still here and film scores continue, that era has ended about the same time as FSM packed up.

My rather pathetic attempt at being a writer on the topic of film music ended about the same time too.

Cheers

I have no recollection of any of this, Senator. Sorry!

Well, as they say, we men develop three problems as we get older: failing memory, loss of hair and failing memory.

But here's a reminder of one of those: https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/daily/article.cfm?articleID=2711

And, wow, it was 20 years ago.

Cheers

I suppose I should have said this years ago, but I wanted to say, Lukas, how grateful I am for your work producing the Bond CDs.

We've all suffered from "missing cue" heartache, but for me it was rarely as painful as in the case of the Bond scores -- particularly On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds Are Forever, my two favorite Bond scores, great swaths of which were never included on the original LPs. So thank-you for amending the travesties which were those original albums!
