    SEASON 2:

"Brother, Can You Spare a Blonde?"
    By: Alf Clausen
    https://archive.org/details/Moonlighting1985/2x01++Brother%2C+Can+You+Spare+A+Blonde.avi

    Highlights:
  • 1:12 in. Clausen's "Miami Vice" scoring impression. A long cue, going on for nearly seven minutes.
  • 38:32 in.

That's all but one short closing cue score.

"The Lady in the Iron Mask"
    By: Alf Clausen
Rejected score by: Richard Lewis Warren (his final effort for the series)
    Replacement score: NO LOAD FOUND.
    Rejected score: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A85HQkjcnNs

    Highlights:

    Rejected score:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 5:10 in.
  • 11:20 in.
  • 14:02 in.
  • 17:43 in.
  • 20:00 in.
  • 25:04/28:21 in.
  • 30:10 in.
  • 36:25 in. Chase music.
  • 39:30 in.

That's pretty much the entire score.

I checked load after load on Youtube and Dailymotion and just kept coming up with rips of the DVD which had Warren's score. There's probably one with Clausen's, but I'm not going to spend the time clicking on another twenty loads or more to find it.

As I found out when I did an interview with Warren a few years ago, he didn't even know his score had been replaced -- nobody told him:

    "Money Talks... Maddie Walks"
    By: Alf Clausen
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ2T8wbLTHo

    Highlights:
  • 13:03 in. One of the famous Nutcracker parts of the classical piece.

Aside from a little source music at the casino, there were only two cues in the episode.

The rest of the series from this point on was scored by Clausen, so there's no further need to list him each time.

"The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfzvIExnJJI

    Highlights:
  • Nothing.

I left the link anyway, 'cause I think just because I didn't care for the score, others might.

10:18 in: Is that pre-existing music?

Clausen was nominated for an Emmy for his score. The other competition that year:
    "Scarecrow and Mrs. King"
Episode: "We're Off to See the Wizard"
    Composer: Arthur B. Rubinstein
    (WINNER)

    "Miami Vice"
    Episode: "Bushido"
    Composer: Jan Hammer

Episode: "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice"

  • 43:30/4431 in.

    That's half the episode score.

    "Knowing Her"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRyIAJbAbn4

    Highlights:
  • 41:26 in.
  • 44:18/44:46 in. Well known funeral music turned chase music.

  • 7:21 in.

  • 0:00 in. Orchestra with wordless humming of the Christmas classic The First Noel.
  • 3:33 in.
  • 33:43 in. We Wish You a Merry Christmas, action-y style.

The cast and crew wave and wish us a merry Christmas at the episode. I suppose Clausen is in there somewhere.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZXxQNkl53w

    Highlights:
  • 42:12/42:56 in.

"The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice"
Cybill Shepherd's two vocals are the big deal for me, and thankfully they're both on the songtrack CD.

    "Knowing Her"
This episode was my introduction to Dana Delany (CHINA BEACH), and it made great use of the Isley Brothers' song "This Old Heart of Mine."

After so many years, the only actual overscore I remember is from a later episode called "It's a Wonderful Job." The sad music for Maddie was sublime.

Alf's work for Moonlighting needs a proper issue. Great stuff indeed.

Wizards and warriors also needs to be heard but as far as I understand, it is a complicated deal...

    Finishing SEASON 5:

    "Shirts and Skins"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vfSwdFLOWY

    Highlights:
  • 0:00/2:24 in. Synth work with a kick drum beat.
  • 14:42 in. Banjo(s) cue.
  • 23:15 in.
  • 25:55 in. Homage to the main theme from "The Pink Panther". Goes on for about three minutes. Some riffs in there based on it, too; not just a straight homage.

    "Take My Wife, for Example"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdJOCJLNzyw

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in. Solo piano cue.
  • 38:18 in.

"I See England, I See France, I See Maddie's Netherworld"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47DHyxs33cs

    Highlights:
  • 37:40 in.
  • 41:10 in.

    "Those Lips, Those Lies"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SQB9q8TQmU

    Highlights:
  • 37:37 in.

For the guys here: 24:43 in. You're welcome.

    "Perfetc"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmPJEO5_Cz8

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in. I have no idea if this is a homage or parody of something.
  • 35:42 in.
  • 40:07 in.*

For those reading who want to know how I delineate between "homage" and "parody":

Homage: Aside from some original riffs, the cue is actually the theme from another TV series of film; it's not dancing around it or changing it.

Parody: While it obvious what the cue is ripping from, the theme/notes are changed. Probably an issue of not securing rights to use the theme (an episode of "The Simpsons", got rights to use "The Great Escape", for example).

    * = I don't know when the commercial started, but the vehicle should have had a bumper sticker that read "Maybe it's Maybelline" (one load on Youtube has the commercial at 1991; the episode is from 1989).

    "When Girls Collide"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0j0QBXvWx8

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in. Maddie's Sad Theme.
  • 25:08 in. Maddie's Sad Theme.

    "In 'N Outlaws"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfRJZe7sV8M

    Highlights:
  • 0:00/0:46/1:44 in. Short "Jaws" homages.
  • 22:21 in. Lovely sad theme that sounds like a combo of Morricone strings and Goldsmith woodwind lyricism. Only a little FX.
  • 24:50 in.
  • 29:21 in.
  • 38:48 in.
  • 47:08 in.

    "Eine Kleine Nacht Murder"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IuUWpIJLZE

    Highlights:
  • 31:25 in.
  • 42:15 in.

    "Lunar Eclipse" (series finale)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO8hv5P7C-0

    Highlights:
  • 1:02 in.
  • 36:31 in.
  • 37:52 in.
  • 42:38 in.
  • About 44:00 in.

That's it. Despite five seasons having been made, it was only sixty-six episodes total.
There were no TV movies or spin-off series.

Lee Holdridge was nominated for an Emmy for the theme song (an one or two other awards for the theme. Clausen and Holdridge both got an award from ASCAP in 1988 for their scoring.

I forgot Emmy nominations for episode scores, so I'll have to go back and edit posts and include that like I usually do.

Last year the creator of the show spoke in an interview about possibly bringing the show back. He thought maybe, as a continuation (not a remake), but was also debating himself saying why not just leave well enough alone (if only more Hollywood people thought like that!).

I never extracted any music for suites. Never got around to it. If and when I fund raise again for a new flash drive (I'll have to think about things and run this by Lukas first), I'll cover some of the show with some suites.
